Hi all I am looking for a 4" 44 and am leaning towards a Ruger Super Blackhawk 4-5/8" for another tool in the tool box type thing for camping hiking etc...I know this is a Smith board so dont beat me up to bad. I have gotten great info from here on all my Smiths.

I have a lot of good woods guns this is what I am working with so far Glock 20sf and 29sf for my 10mm addiction, I ordered the 6.61" threaded and 4.6" lonewolf barrels. I have the following Smiths 629 stealth hunter, 329 AK Backpacker, Governor, 460V, 686+ talo, and 340 M&P, my non smiths are a Taurus Raging Bull 44 6" and Chiappa Rhino. As you can see no 4" revolver and that just aint right I can hardly sleep at night knowing that I dont have a 4" powerhouse in the collection.

I would like to pair my 44's with a Stainless 1894 JM Marlin 44, I hope to find one by the end of the year. I have 2 Stainless and a blued gold trigger JM Marlins 2 336's 30-30 and 35 Remington (35 is blued) and a 1895 guide gun, I love the guide gun but it would be nice to have a pistol rifle combo that shares the same ammo.

So thats why looking at the Ruger SBH strong, less complex less money be a more natural fit with the lever gun; and though my Smiths are awesome I tend to baby them. I looked at a 629 V-Comp as well, almost bought it, but i would be to scared to take it out and scratch it up for the cost.

A 629 Mt gun is an idea if can find one for the right price the MT guns looks just dont appeal to me that much though. I have never owned a Ruger and have only shot my buddies a couple times but his SBH was very accurate and I had a lot of fun shooting it, so I dont know much about them. Still on the fence here. Am I misguided looking at a single action for self defense in the woods, trail, camping etc... Something I dont mind getting dirty etc.. I have not had this much of a problem picking a gun in forever.

Thanks for the help all

4in 629 should suit your purpose. 4in 24-3 if 44 spl. appeals to you.

NO.... Your not cheating

This is a Smith board, but I suspect that are plenty on here
like me who also own, collect and admire Ruger revolvers as well, especially the Single Action Blackhawk/Super Blackhawk
type revolvers. Smith doesn't make any single action revolvers that I am familiar with:D
I love my Smith revolvers, but there is something cool about the handling characteristics of Ruger blackhawk revolvers.
All of my blackhawk revolvers shoot well, a couple VERY well.

Go with the Ruger SBH. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

I like the magnums what would be heavier the Ruger SBH 4-5/8" or the 629 MT gun to carry? Is the 629 V-comp worth the money or better off with the MT gun? I appreciate the help I was just wondering what would make the 629 better over the Ruger SBH? In the 4" platform for strictly a woods gun/range gun?

your idea same as mine

I have a Marlin 1894 in 357/38 and a Ruger Blackhawk 357/38 with a 4 5/8 barrel that I paired up and carry together when checking hog traps or riding or walking the land on our hunting club in south arkansas.

Thank you for the reply I too love my Smiths and I dont think diversity is a bad thing. I wish Smith would make a single action for sure. What sixe Rugers do you have, would the 4-5/8" SBH wear comfortably in a cross draw?

I was thinking as a woods gun I dont need to speed reload I cant see any encounter 2 or 4 legged going a 6 round distance, I could load it hot and just another level of safety in the back 40. I am finding I love to shoot my revolvers more then my semi autos these days, and there is something about being on the Appalachian trail with a revolver that is just cool. I aapreciate the help I am in turmoil here.

You Sir have great taste that is exactly what I want set up wise but in 44 what size Ruger you have?

Sorry missed the 4-5/8" speed reading how do you like the handling of the Ruger and how do you carry?

What!?

Seriously, no offense, I have owned both - started with Rugers first -

But the absolute best revolver in the world, BAR NONE is a four inch N frame S&W. The balance is perfect, the performance is perfect, the ergonomics are perfect. And if you cannot get it done with 4" then 6" or 8" ain't going to save you.

If I was only going to own one pistol , it would be a 629 mt gun. 44 spl, for going to meetins' and 44 magnum when huntin'.

I came to S&W late in my gun collecting, having been impressionable during their Anti Gun Owners period.

So this is after a lot of Colts, Rugers and Taurus pistols.... I sold them all (well almost ;-)) and replaced with N frames.

Perfection, nothing less, buy one, try it you'll get rid of something else I bet....

Smiths are first on my list but there is certainly nothing wrong with the Ruger single actions. More than a couple live at my house. You may just be opening yourself up to a new favorite - they are much less expensive then most Smiths and usually pretty easy to find. If you like to tinker with your guns as I do you might find they are a great source of enjoyment.

Smiths are for using, and caring for and handling lovingly. When a Smith gets abused people cry.

Rugers are best when you get them muddy and throw them in a tool box like an old hammer. When a Ruger gets abused, people say, "so what it's just a Ruger."

sbh 44 mag

you will not be disappointed. and the 4 5/8" should be comfortable to carry in any position. I carried my 7 1/2" sbh crossdraw though. you may want to try the diff grip styles. the squared trigger guard has been known to bite a few people.

I own both in different calibers and never feel cheated packing either my Ruger's or my Smith's. They are both great guns in their own right. My most accurate gun I own is a GP100 4in. that just plain puts em where you point.

The Ruger Super Blackhawk 4-5/8" would be an excellent choice for a woods gun. If you are comfortable with a single action revolver, you can't get a better one, with out taking out a bank loan.

Me, I am a died in the wool single/double action revolver lover. My woods gun is a 5 inch M625-2 in .45ACP. There are no bears where I roam.

That said, I just picked up a new SP-101 8 shot, in 22 LR that may well retire my M617 once I get the trigger right on it. Rugers are excellent guns and many if not most people on this site have a Ruger or two, or five in their gun safe.

Thats a good analogy and sums it up to me I love my Smiths I have my 686+ Talo sitting next to me it is one of my favorite house gun and almost always ends up on my nightstand next to my favorite house gun the KSG.

I find myself not using the Smiths a lot for woods carry because they just shoot so well and are too darn pretty :D. I will get a couple 44 Preformance Center guns eventuallye but I hate to take the ones I have now out in the woods and worry about scuffing them up. I dont think I would worry to much about that with a Ruger.

I hear you on the 45 ACP and its the same in TN 45ACP would solve any problem here I love my 1911's and I recently picked up a PMR 30 22 Mag that is so light and sweet and in Tn would be a great woods gun too but 22 mag is so hard to find and I justify every gun purchase as a woods gun or zombie apocalypse gun  I find myself shooting most of my double actions in single action quiet a bit. I want a 4" Smith as well but thats a later topic :) Me and a buddy plan to do a lot of overnight fishing on Fontana lake in NC this summer and as anyone knows thats been there its pretty desolate when you get way back there. So I think my lever gun and 4" 44 magnum would make me sleep a lot better. So I do want something that I can keep in a tent a boat truck etc...without to much worry.

I recently bought a 5 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag - stainless.

A good gun.

The rosewood grip it comes with looks great but hurts my hand, so I bought a Pachmayr presentation grip for it.

A very reliable and strong gun and can probably take high power loads better than S&W 629's.

Just for the heck of it, I mail ordered a couple boxes of Buffalo Bore 44 mag 340 grain +p+ Ruger-only loads to try in it. Haven't received them yet.

Note that the 4 5/8 and 5 1/2 " Super Blackhawk use the rounded trigger guard (instead of square on the longer barrel SBH's). Its the same grip frame as the regular (not Super) Blackhawks -- so take that into account if you order an after-market grip for yours.

Another nice point. My SBH came with no "infernal" lock.

For those that have both the 629 Mt gun and a Ruger 4-5/8" SBH which one carries better for you? I know you can load the Rugers hotter but boy the Smiths have the nicest triggers and to be honest if I need hotter then a 305 gr 44 magnum I will break out the 460 DA/SA is nice to have but thinking a SA for this intended purpose might be more desireable?

I was thinking of that very thing the Buffalo Bore 44 +p+ let me know what you think after you shoot a few. I talked to buffalo bore about my 329 AK Backpacker and using their heavy 44 305 gr round since its a steel cylinder they said no problem just be some recoil :D. I look forward to trying it out. I heard that the Ruger round trigger guard does not have the knuckle bite like the square shape does. Did your Pachmayr grips fit well?

Say WHAT !?!?

If I were to catch anyone throwin one of MY Rugers in the mud and rattlin it around in an old tool box like a hammer, I'd probably club em over the head with one of my Smiths....... count on it !:D
I , Like most, have both.... and treat them equally. Because they are both awesome choices ! For me, they are, and always have been, the ONLY choices for a revolver. Either way, you win.....
