Hello everyone I am new to the forum and a have purchased my first smith and wesson weapon it is a M&P 15, I have wanted a AR since before I went into the service and finally purchased one 2 weeks ago. First was very disappointed that after spending $1100.00 the rifle was handed to me in a cardboard box (no hard case) where cheaper AR's come with a hard case, second problem was that after getting it home i noticed 2 grooves "carved" into the upper receiver above the ejection port and several areas missing the finish,I took it back to the dealer, which sent it back to smith and wesson for repairs, it arrived to smith and wesson last wed. to there "mail" facility, called today and was told it was in the "long gun facility" yesterday but do to snow storms they were behind on repairs and had to bring in a SECOND gunsmith. Really a SECOND guy ? This large company only has 1 person repairing there long guns ? Please tell me I didnt go wrong buying this weapon ? Sorry for the long post

Matt, just curious, what model exactly did you buy? My 15OR which was purchased in December and recently built just this past November came in a hard case and was perfect (no scratches, finish flawless and performs flawlessly with surplus 5.56.

Is it one of the new, less expensive versions or a traditional, 1/9 chromed bbl. model?

I picked up a M&P15T (the good one, not the new cheap version) a few weeks ago and it came in a hard case. The particular shop will always bring me a fresh one from the back unless the floor model is the last one, and when he brought it out it was in a box but it was the rifle in the hard case in the box, if that makes sense. Were the internals of the box fitted for the rifle or was it just a hollow, rifle case shaped box? I saw a couple shops in the past, which I don't frequent any more, try to pull that sh*t.....keeping the case for themselves. One thing to look for is on the S&W site, it will tell you the options it comes with ( I don't know about the case though). My Tac model specifically said it came with 2 mags, so when I was told it only comes with one I threw a minor fit:mad:, bartered a little:confused:, and got a 100rd beta mag they had for display only for $50:D. and as far as the gunsmith thing, companies as large as s&w with a diverse line of firearms will tend to have different gunsmiths for different lines. I wouldn't see it uncommon for them to have only one for their ar line. That doesn't mean it isn't going to go through a few other hands for quality assurance, it just means they're taking the proper steps to ensure rifles aren't rushed through. S&W does seem to take their time when it comes to repairs, but I personally don't know of a rifle that has had to go back twice for the same problem. Don't be afraid to call over and over if you have questions either. Some get kind of annoyed but like it or not, that's what they're there for. If you ask for a particular gent he's damn good to work with. I'll see if I can't find his name and post it up for you.

I purchased the traditonal M&P 15, 1/9 barrel chromed, removable carry handle, I sent smith and wesson a email regarding the case and was told they have stopped giving the hard case with the rifles, the cardboard box was horrible, it had some foam lining in it and everything was just kinda thrown in the box, I purchased the weapon from a a dealer which is a family friend. I'm getting a bad taste in my mouth regarding this weapon already and have not even put a round through it yet

With the box thing and the reuction in quality parts it shows s&w is trying to get better sales in the current market. But, the operation is the same and have seen few bad reports and have none myself. Sucks it was a little scuffed but I'm willing to bet after it returns you'll never have an issue. OH, one thing if you call 'em back give your sn to see what your manufacture date is. That'll settle some questions too.

beginingoftheend, Thank you for that information, I'm looking forward to puting some lead down range !!!

I'm sure the rifle will be fine, my M&P15 is one of the very few guns that when i bought it i really felt good about it,the only down side to my deal was the magazine that came with the gun looked like it had been dragged down a gravel road and i was not pleased with the case it came with,i replaced mine with the $20.00 Flambeau brand from Academy sports, i now use the S&W case for one of my .22's:D

I purchased an M&P15 "VTAC" in winter of 2009 and it came with a black plastic case.

Did not shoot the rifle until summer of 2010. After 40 rounds the trigger was "double tapping"...discharged the first round when pulling the trigger and then discharging the second round when I released the trigger.

I called S&W and they emailed me a Fed-Ex return label, Fed Ex picked up the next day and I had back in my hands in 7 days (total time). S&W was very interested finding the problem...they replaced the entire trigger works and now it shoots. fine. Atleast 400 rounds through this past fall.

I don't check in much, but the title caught me, "warranty issues".

Some folks have nothing BUT good things to say about S&W warranty work. Unfortunately, I have NOTHING GOOD to say about my own experiences with it. I won't go into details, but I have an old thread about it on this site if you want to search for it.

Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones.

On the other hand, I have nothing but good things to say about my M&P15 MOE 5.56. It has performed perfectly since I replaced the original bad bolt assembly. Plus it's a beautiful weapon with the dark earth color Magpul furniture.

Hopefully BOTH your gun and S&W service will be good.:)

Mattc; not dogging you here or anything; but one of the biggest advantages to purchasing a weapon from a local dealer instead of online or directly through the dealer, is that you get to touch, feel, hold, and see what you're buying. Millions of people spend hundreds of dollars more for a weapon locally, just for this convenience and advantage. Apparently, you never even looked at the gun that you bought from your local gun shop. "Which also happens to be a family friend". Again; not dogging or anything. Just hoping the next person who reads this and goes to their local gun store to buy a gun, thinks about looking at it before paying for it. If you had looked at it and realized the 2 grooves in, you might not had bought it. You obviously realized that it didn't come with a hard case. Sorry; but unless you bought this online and had it shipped to your local gun store for pickup, there's no reason you should have paid for it if it came with those marks on it.
