Went to take some steaks out of the freezer to defrost. Found they were already defrosted. Fridge took a dump. Now tomorrow I have to see if the spare fridge out under the cover still works and manhandle it into the garage. That ought to be fun. Gonna miss the ice maker until I can buy a new one. Just not in a spot where I can afford 1500-2000 right now if I have a working fridge. Bright side? Once I can afford one I can turn the spare into a kegerator!

Wife and I married in 78, by the first anniversary I had bought my parents spare upright deep freezer! It was a 1961 Norge 23 Cubic foot, We left it in the farmhouse when we moved in 2014, still going strong!

Currently have some off brand upright in the 21-23 CF range, it is OK, but I really don't trust it! (about 15-20 years old) The kitchen has a Side-by-Side Ref/Freezer (about 22-25 years old) Not as much room as a good o/u 2 door fridge.

the only downside to a Kegerator is both, my beer consumption and waste line would increase!

Got a couple of chest freezers in the garage. Both 1970's era and both still going strong. Fridge was a 20 year old side by side KitchenAid. Luckily I still have my brother's fridge. When he passed we put it out under the cover. Hasn't been plugged in in years, but we'll see.

I'm not hopeful on modern Kitchen Aid (or most others) that have sat not running for a few years. The condenser coils rust internally, then overload the compressor.

I have a med size chest freezer I bought from a friend for a hundred bucks a few years ago going strong. An upright that was at least twenty years old we bought from an estate sale lasted a year and died (taking all my deer meat with it) last year. Thinking about moving again so any new fridge/freezer purchases are on hold.

Timely post. My job for today is to find out what is going on with the wine cooler fridge. It was here when we moved in eight years ago, and it certainly wasn't put in the day before. ;)

Bought a new whirlpool refrigerator in 2017. The light circuit quit about 3 years into it. Warranty was past. It now works most of the time after cleaning contacts. The clear shelf panels have cracked. I have replaced one with 3/8" plywood cut to fit and painted with 3 coats of white paint.

Keep the old stuff running as long as you can. I believe more bells, whistles and add on have doomed many appliances to early failure.

When the ice maker died on our old fridge I moved it out into the "barn" out back to make room for our new one. I also have a full size freezer in the washroom. Back when it was Dad, Mom and I plus the dogs it was nice to have all that room. Now there is only me and it feels like way too much empty space in all of them. Except for the outdoor fridge, that one holds my beer so it at least is pretty full.:D

It's nearly impossible to find a fridge without an ice maker. They take up 25-30% of the freezer. I'm old school. Plastic ice trays are easy to refill.

When I shopped for a new refrigerator three years ago, I went to Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, a major regional appliance store, and a large local appliance store. Only Lowes had two different ones to choose from. I bought a Frigidaire without ice maker, set the temps with a thermometer placed in both compartments, and haven't needed to adjust it since.

Got the spare moved inside and suddenly the old fridge is working again. This just too much fun.

Looks like you're ahead of the game. My wine cooler seems to be dead. I suspect the refrigerant has gone AWOL looking at some funky stains inside that look like they might be the oil additive.

Good news, a spare fridge that has been sitting outside since we moved here appears to work just fine. Need to swap the door and work out how to remove the old one. It almost looks like the unit it sits under was built around it. That could be a problem.
