I am in my 60's and raised my son on my own so I know about grocery shopping. I can't believe what we're paying for basic stuff today. The latest insult was Walmarts pricing on cheapo non brand name clothes washing detergent. ***? I see grocery boxes get smaller for the same price. Six months later the same box costs 5-10% more. Six months later the box shrinks again. I really feel for people trying to raise a family today.

Shrinkage

If you are really paying attention to prices then you need to check quantity as well. Everything is shrinking, bread being the lastest casualty.
We all know you don't get pounds of anything any more.
I was PO'ed when Roman Meal bread slices started looking like demi loaves on the last two I purchased.

Yeh, watch the dollar shrink in the next year.:(

I do all the shopping, have for years.

When the super Walmarts opened, I started getting the groceries there and saw a solid 20% saving over Kroger and Publix.

Walmart still beats them, but not by as much these days, closer to 16% near as I can make it.

But, I have found a "scratch and dent" grocery wharehouse. If you are up on current prices, you can really find some great deals.

Name brand dog food for less than 1/2 the price as Wallyworld.

Also, they get resteraunt packaged frozen foods that are really good deals. Large Frozen pizzas, $2. 3 large frozen pizzas $2.50 (broken in several pieces, but not bad).

Frozen fish fillets, 1.50 to 2.00 a pound, great stuff.

Coffee! Restaurant grind for $2 a pound, and you can really taste the difference.

Sausage, $1 a pound. 12 ounce gags hard pretzels, 4 for $1. Many more deals like this.

Some stuff is the same or more than other stores. And they have a real meat dept, with a butcher and fresh cuts of meat. All in all, it is a must stop on the way to do my regular shopping.

The only down side is I feel like I am shopping in a 3rd world country, not because of the customers (they are mostly good hard working folks, not typical Wallmart types mentioned here often). And I fear this is the future of commerce in this country.

I feel for my kids & grandkids, if this continues.
If I go to my local supermarket, 4 bags of groceries is $100, jobs suck, and our dollar is sinking. All my kids are gainfully employed but by the time the grandkids are ready it's gonna be a tough world, with a 3 trillion $ deficit.
I'm fortunate in that with my military disibility, I have medical & all base priviledges. Groceries at the PX/Commisary are about half what the supermarket prices are, w/ no sales tax.

And who see'z you can't make Chicken soup from chicken poop.
What comes around goes around. And I don't need no liberal telling that. They think they know something,(self edit again)

Remember when a can of coffee was 16 oz. Now it went to 13 Oz. now they are 10.8 Oz,,,and the price has gone up every time...double screw...less product and price increase

Got my garden in last week. Put in 50 tomato plants, 20+ peppers, and about 50 squash, cucumber, etc. plants. The fruit trees are loaded (7 pear trees, 3 peach, 3 persimmon trees and 5 fig trees). We planted the trees 5 years ago. We will do a lot of canning this summer if the rains come at the right time. It cost about $200 to plow, plant, fertalize, and lime a 2700 sq ft plot. With tomatoes at $2.50 a pound the garden will pay for itself, this will be the 6th year for the garden and this Florida sand is getting right to grow stuff.

Potato Chips

My wife brought home a bag of potato chips from the store, along with several other items. I'm a chip fan so I grab the bag and commence eating until I notice on the bag a pre printed price of $3.99 and looked at the weight 6.5oz. Holy sh-t thats $9.76 a pound. Anyone know how to make "chips" out of steak??
When we were kids we would raid a garden now and then, comon folks get those gardens going!!!!!!!!!!

Growing up in the late '50's early '60's Mom wouldn't buy potato chips, she said they were too expensive. Today's prices would surely have her rolling over in her grave. I don't know what a pound of butter costs these days but I remember Mom telling me I shouldn't be using so much butter because it cost .69 cents a pound.

Our government is telling us there is no inflation. Why aren't you guys listening? All is well. The dollar is sound. We can tax a trillion and spend three trillion for the next ten years without inflation. Bernanke is watching that. Go borrow some money and buy a new Suburban to drive to the grocery store to bring home all those 10.8 oz. pounds of $10 coffee.

I pay $1.63 lb. for butter at Sam's Club. My wife and I got married in 1967 and our combined gross income that year was $8040.86. Our federal income tax for the year was $1007.09. Adjusted income was $6036.77. Our income now is much greater and the federal taxes are actually lower. Now I don't mean to say I prefer the way things are today:(, but rather I am just stating a few facts concerning prices, taxes, and incomes. I can buy an LCD 32" tv today for the price of a color set in a cabinet back then, I think 21".

I have found that everyone needs to check their reciept after checking out at the store. Every week I find double charges and charges that I didn't buy. I don't confront the checker I go to the one in charge so they at least know it happened. Prices are high enough without errors.

How about that 10 pound bag of ice that now weighs 3Kg
I tell my kids that when I was a young'un a 10 pound bag of ice weighed 10 pounds-they look at me like I'm crazy
