... with my 6" 686-4 and my 4" 19-4, firing .357 magnum ammo. Everyone else at the range was firing black plastic 9mm pistols, and getting dinner-plate-sized groups at 5 yards. My holes were all touching at 10 yards. Theirs sounded like pop-pop-pop. Mine were boom...boom. Felt good to have a crowd around me to see what I was shooting, and ask what it was.

NovaJoe, I have experienced the same reaction. Most of those that approach me are in their 20s and 30s. They came along after the rush to switch from revolver to auto loaders. They have had little exposure to the goodness of a good revolver. I allowed one to handle one of my revolvers and he was immediately taken by the smoothness of the mechanicals of it.
I think that perhaps he will be looking at revolvers on his next visit to the gun store.

NovaJoe... I know exactly how you feel.

While at the range it seems I'm surrounded by black plastic autoloaders, with a sprinkling of 1911s in the mix.

I ALWAYS have at least one big-bore S&W revolver with me, and when the BIG BOOMS! start, you can count on a crowd reaction. I can't help it... I kinda like it. I don't shoot the magnums as much as I used to, but .44 Specials still seem to do the trick.

Best wishes everyone!

Same here. I'll admit to owning some plastic. But, I enjoy magnum revolvers too, and I shoot them well. I'm almost positive that a few younger range members have bought their first S&W because of me.

There's nothing wrong being an equal opportunity shooter. I love my wheel gun...but I also love Berettas (hint...name!) & I have no shame in saying so.
It is a good feeling hearing the boom though! [emoji41]

All of my 4 handguns are "old school", and all have beautiful wood grips. However, the one that has guys coming over to look and talk is my S&W model 41, which I've has for 20 years.

I can see that. I've never owned one. But, it's "the only one like it."

I turned a few heads last fall, when I brought my buddy's R8 with me to the range. Between its "interesting" looks, and the 8X 357 Magnum, it got some attention.

Great post NovaJoe. Reflecting on my last weeks indoor shoot, I too was surrounded by rapid fire at 3-5 yards all coming from semi's. I wanted to ask, "who is shooting buckshot" as their groups were non existent.
I calmly ran my standard bullseye target down to 30 feet and kept up steady DA fire at a reasonable pace. Every once in awhile out if my peripheral vision I could catch a glimpse of someone from another bay checking out my 586L comp. It was hard to conceal my wry smile.

I think some just like the boom. I've gotten a look or two when a revolver comes out but also when I shoot my M&P357c...it has a fair boom factor.

I agree with petepeterson's comment on blue getting less attention than stainless...with the younger crowd anyway. My SIL will get more looks with his Ruger GP100 than I will with a 586.

Those revolvers are like a nice side by side double barrel shotgun, just beautiful.

I normally load my model 29 4" and 686 4" with 2400 powder...
at the range besides the boom factor, the fireball puts the range on pause. Main response from others is WOW!
I get a chuckle out of that.
