In my SUV there is a floor compartment. On a recent trip I put a box of 45 ACP down in the compartment. We had a cooler in the car and the drain plug was pretty much right over the top of that area and it was leaking and I didn't know it. 5 days later finishing cleaning out the car from the trip, I remembered the box of ammo in the floor and open up the compartment. Little compartment had about three quarters of an inch of water in it, which is just about halfway up the box of cartridges which were Nose down. I took the cartridges out of the box, wiped them all off dry and I put them in a container and Layered the cartridges and white rice all the way up to the top and covered the whole thing with rice. I'm going to let them sit in the rice for at least about 2 weeks. The way I'll see it is if they go bang good if they don't o, I'll just discard them.
Do you guys think these cartridges Will Survive & Fire ?
You guys forsee any dangers of trying to fire them?
In advance I appreciate your input.

a good factory crimp and a brand new primer pocket should make them darn watertight.

I doubt that the water will hurt that ammo but it might have been different if it were oil or a solvent.

I am voting on it firing after a time of resting and relaxation.

If you have them, try putting them in a Zip-Lok bag, for those weird storage place, times.

I have had water penetration with factory .45ACP ammo before. But they were sitting primer down for a couple of months. I'd bet yours will be just fine.

I helped a friend with flood cleanup , he gave me all his flooded ammo [ .22 , .38 , .357 , .45acp , .44mag , and 12ga.] most of it went bang, but enough didn't to make it practice ammo not! carry. The ammo was initially under about 3 feet of muddy water for a few hours, then about 2 weeks in same water in plastic storage boxes till cleanup got around to opening up boxes and dealing with the ammo. In a flood there are many pressing things to clean besides ammo. That most of the ammo did work was testimony to how well it was made. In total about 3000-4000 rounds.
I don't know why but the .45acp was the most affected cal. , only abt. half went bang. Finally gave up shooting them and am pulling apart for components.
My guess would be that you would have no problem with the short time and low water level.
Let us know they turn out.

It should be fine.

I did something similar a few years ago. At the time I too had an SUV with a compartment in the floor. At the time I didn't have a carry permit, so I decided that floor compartment was a good place to hide my carry pistol while hiking in a national park with my son. The ice chest was in the back seat with the drain plug over the floor compartment, and yes, it leaked too. Several days later I remembered where I'd left the gun. It was literally underwater. I cleaned it up and oiled it good. The next time I went to the range I fired off the hollow points in the gun since I didn't trust them for carry.

Every one of them fired with no issues.

I'm sure it will go "bang", especially since the primer end of the rounds did not get wet.

In case no one has yet advised, they will be absolutely fine. :-)
p.s. TRUE STORY: I have a friend (actually many) who is a hoarder. He keeps his .45ACP RELOADS in 5 gal buckets (really). One such bucket became completely filled with water while he was moving (and left if for hours in the pouring rain). It stayed full of water for weeks (really)...I told you he's a hoarder right? Hard to keep track of all that garbage. ANYWAY, every round fired when he got around to shooting them. He told me, and I actually believe him.

J.
