What ammo doesn't work well in the MP 15-22?

Hello all. I just picked up my M&P 15-22 today so I haven't had a chance to fire it yet but I saw this thread about ammo so I thought I'd post what my owners manual says about this.

I'll quote from the manual:
"Through our testing, Smith & Wesson has found that there are several brands and types of .22LR ammunition that do not perform consistently or reliably. Consequently, Smith & Wesson DOES NOT RECOMMEND that the following brands or types of .22LR ammunition be used in your M&P 15-22."

Remington Golden Bullet
Remington Target 22
Remington Thunderbolt
Winchester Wildcat
Any and all sub-sonic brands and types.

Also if you have the Performance Center Model it is equipped with a .22LR Lanley semi-auto match chamber which does not accommodate CCI Stinger brand ammunition. WARNING: Never use CCI .22LR Stinger brand ammunition in your M&P 15-22 Performance Center Model Rifle.

OK on to what they DO recommend.

"Based on the design and action of the M&P 15-22, Smith & Wesson recommends that you use the following brands and types of .22LR ammunition for optimal performance in your M&P 15-22 rifle".

CCI Standard Velocity
CCI Mini-Mag
Aguila Super Extra Std. Velocity
Aguila Super Extra High Velocity
Federal American Eagle
Federal GameShock
Winchester Super-X High Velocity

Sorry for the long post but I thought it might be a help to those wondering about what ammo to use.
I just commented about this in an earlier thread, "Weird ammo question". It seems S&W has found that some work and some don't. I think I narrowed it down to the hollow points and smooth tips. The hollow points stovepiped a tremendous amount of times where the smooth tips didn't. So much for their recommendations

hmmm, the win super x IS recommended? wow we couldnt feed more than 2 or 3 without a jam.

I tested this round and they group really well, If you observe the recoil on the 15-22, they run a little hot and the rifle absorbs a harsh vibration with each shot as compared to a normal ~1200fps round. The CCI Velocitor runs at 1435fps, which is slower than the Stinger, but I assessed it didn't feel right for the 15-22's plastic frame to take over and over again.

Wow, thats an awesome test. Thanks for sharing your results.

Humm. Very interesting on the pounding the CCI velociter handed out. Thanks for your testing and input on this subject.

Do not use Walmart's Winchester 333 bulk box.

I shooted 2 magazines of CCI from walmart NO PROBLEM, I shoot 1 Magazine of Winchester 333 bulk box HORRIBLE, it took the fun out of firing.

(3) Failure to feed
(4) Failure to fire
(2) Jammed (see picture)

After the last jam I decided no more shooting with those 333, I loaded my MP15 with CCI's and problem solved.

Winchester Wildcat

I did a bold thing the other day. I bought 1k rounds of this stuff. The first 500 have been fired just easy shooting with absolutely no troubles what so ever.

Last Friday was our equivalent of indoor hillbilly christmas tree choppin'.

As I stood in front of my ammosafe I decided to grab a full box of 500 rounds of Winchester Wildcat and put my 15-22 to the ultimate ammo test. Throwing 500 wildcats downrange - fast.

I had only 1 failure. Ammo related, not the gun - round wouldn't even go off in a .22 Diamondback revolver.

Only thing I can say is that the grouping is a bit wider with this ammo but hey - if ones choppin' down a christmas tree... who cares?

Just finished cleaning and I haven't found any irregularities.
So here's the question: why does S & W not recommend Winchester Wildcat- ammo?

cdesigns: "Do not use Walmart's Winchester 333 bulk box."

I'm not a real fan of the Win 333 box in general, but they shoot fine in my 15-22.

I have a hard time getting any .45 auto ammo to shoot. Doesn't matter what brand I use.

I've shot lots of Federal and CCI Blazer bulk pack with no problems. Also a 100 rds. or so of Winchester Super X ran fine. Have read in this, and other, forums that the Remington ammo doesn't shoot well in the 15-22.

All rifles are different and so are the different batches of ammo. Mine hates the CCI Blazers, at least the brick I have now.

I doubt I`ll buy another batch of blazers , but if I did , they might behave better, but I`m unwilling to find out , after the poor results i`v had so far.

What didn't run good:

CCI Shotshells. (No recoil to work the bolt, but they fed great as a straight pull bolt action.)

So no magazine, lock the bolt back and just drop one in the chamber while riding the bolt forward slowly? Or do they work well in the magazine and able to slide in with an un-altered feed ramp? I'd like to shoot these for fun :)

I had the same problem with the Winchester 333 and 555 ammo from Walmart. So far I haven't had any problems from the Federal bulk ammo I just bought. We'll see how it goes when I finish the box.

Hmmmmm. I shoot Remington golden bullets all the time. Out of 550 rounds I had only one fail to fire, bad primer, and that's it.

Not sure if its been mentioned but my manual actually recommends NOT using remmington. LOL

Remington Golden Bullet

Just got my 15-22 today for Xmas and 4 boxes of remington GB ammo. Sounds like my grandson will have lots of ammo to put through his marlin 22 tube feed. I'll need to find some federal or CCI ammo and give them a try.

i got a cheap box of winchester wildcat .22 ammo (but the shells said super-x on them so did winchester just relabel them?) and have had one FTF out of 400 rounds. i'll call that a fluke.

seems to like the federal bulk pack and so does my wallet!

Remington

cci minimags, Federal bulk work great from what ive read, and from what ive read, stay away from Remington bulk.

I just went through a brick of 550 Remington and only had 2 misfires. Maybe I got lucky, but it worked great in my SW M&P 15-22.
