Got a email today from Norton, stating my anti-virus was coming due next month and I would be charged approx $140.00 in September. The price this year was $73.00. I haven't agreed to ANY of the great and wonderful offers they have made this subscription year.

I have been doing some research on the net, looking for a better deal.

What does everybody here use. I am rather serious about security, but I don't like their strong arm tactics.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I used to use bitdefender but it kept going up every year so I just use the Windows Defender on Windows 10. I have had no problems so far.

Looking at their list prices, is it possible you have their 5 device plus Lifelock subscription? Maybe you accidentally upgraded to more service than you need?

Edit: I run Norton on my PC's and have an ASUS WiFi Router with a built-in protection for all our internet connected devices, powered by Trend Micro. The times that Norton flags a threat, the router based protection from Trend Micro does also. So if your protection need is in a static location, perhaps a router upgrade is the best value. These AiProtection routers offer the internet protection without the recurring subscription fee. Also, routers with the new standard of Wi-Fi6 are now available, so an investment in better hardware might help pay for itself by you not needing the additional subscription.

Avast free

Google 10 best anti-virus and Avast Free should come up. Just go to the OFFICIAL website and dl it. Occasionally you'll get an offer to upgrade to some PRO version, but just decline. The free version updates to catch all the new stuff. I use it along with the free Malwarebytes program, keeps me clean.

I use Bitdefender. It's always among the top in various consumer review line-ups, and it offers encryption features such as Safepay for online banking that go far beyond the standard Windows stuff.

Every year at some point long before expiration, I've been getting offers to renew at some ridiculous reduced rate, like 29.95 instead of 89.95.

I do that.

Windows Defender is a perfectly acceptable security suite built-in to Windows 10. It runs in the background and doesn't slow your system down to where you would notice it. In addition, it is free and very frequently updated.

If you prefer to use a non-Microsoft solution then check with your internet service provider as they might offer one for free with you internet service, or they might even already run one in the background on their end before you even receive any data.

For consumer-level protection, there is really no need to pay for what is already offered for free. Now if you run a business that had to meet certain security requirements (or if you practice risky online behavior like purchasing from questionable sites, etc.) then upgrading probably wouldn't be a bad idea but for normal household surfing and shopping on Amazon, etc. the free stuff is just fine.

Just remember, no security suite can fully protect you from doing something to yourself like clicking on links in spam email and such. The best online defense is skepticism.

Been using McAfee since 1995.

Only time I ever got a virus, was when I let it lapse years ago.

They send me a reminder when my plan is a month from expiring. When I click the link, the price is $69.00 for a year.

If I check their web site the same plan is $39.00 a year. I always call them and get a renewal for the $39.00 price.

Unlike cable companies, they'll give you a break when you've been with them for mass years.

I'm in the Windows defender group.

Over the last decades, I've hadem all.

Most turn your computer into anti-virus machines.

It sets itself up with priority over anything else. Will take nearly all the resources you have. Then your computer slows to a crawl.

Then I looked back, when did the anti-virus really do anything? Never stopped anything bad, never found any real bad files.

Many people will consider things like Norton and McAfee to be viruses of there own.

I do run Malwarebytes every so often, never finds anything...

Windows Defender is rated as good or better than any of the others. It is free, doesn't hog and take over your computer and its free...

Windows Defender, it's like your computer wearing a mask ;)

Does Windows Defender play well with Google Chrome or do you have to use MS Edge? I've been using Norton for years to great effect, and it occasionally "catches" something. But the price increases are bothersome.

Centurylink provided Norton with their internet service. Never had a problem with it. Now they switched to McAfee so we'll see how that goes.
