I'm as much a collector as I am a shooter. With that said I want a S&W 357/38 special collection. So far the only one I have is a Ruger SP101. I like it a lot and I feel it will be a great shooter.

For my S&W collection I'm attempting to buy a very nice Model 10-6 right now to kick it off. I figure the Model 10 is a great starting point for a 357/38 S&W collection. As well I'd like to start cheap and work my way up in prices. :D :p

So far on the list I have

357: 686+ Talos, 627 8 shot

38: Model 10, 36, 442 Performance center

If at all possible, you should try to get at least one 3" K-frame (10/64 in .38 Special, 13/65/66 in .357 Magnum).

I want to mainly focus on 3" with shorter being the next option. I'm passing on a lot of 4"+. The longer barrels just don't do much for me.

This model 10 I'm getting is 4"

.38 special: S&W model 64-5

.357 magnum: a pair of S&W 686-6 4 inch barrel 6 shot cylinders. and a Ruger sp101 with a 2.25 inch barrel.

You need to find something to focus on.

One of each frame size, all with same finish, & barrel length.

All variants within one frame size.

Or just buy what speaks to you.

I have a LGS near me, that updates their used gun page daily. I keep an eye on it, & run down to look at anything that is interesting.

Is the 10-6 you are looking at by chance in .357 mag? S&W made a few before changing over to the Model 13. If so, buy it!

My list would include Model 13,19, 27 or 28 to start.

It's a long list................

First by frame size; J,K,L,N,............ then the model numbers.......

Models 10,12,13,14,15,19,27,28,36,60, 64,65,66,67, 586,686, .................then you have the pre-1957s........with names

M&P,Registered Magnum,Combat Magnum, Highway Patrolman, .357 Magnum,.........................................................then by

Barrel lengths:2,2.5,3,4,5,6,6.5,8 inch.............then you got the

5,6,7 and 8 shot versions.........................................

:D

Buying some books to do your own research might be better than relying on us addicts for advice :). The Standard Catalog of S & W is about to have a 4th edition published; History of S & W by Roy Jinks and S & W 1857-1945 by Neal and Jinks are also highly regarded. Good luck in your search.
