What birds put a smile on your face in your locale

Another of my favorites is the flicker. One magic day when I was about 10 years old, a flicker inched down the trunk of an oak in the woods and hopped to my finger. They say that bird encounters like this are visitations from beyond. Sounds reasonable to me.

American Dipper

Although I have to travel to the Rockies to see him, this is my favorite bird of almost 50 years of birding.

"A chunky bird of western streams, the American Dipper is North America's only truly aquatic songbird. It catches all of its food underwater in swiftly flowing streams by swimming and walking on the stream bottom."

We live on a lake and are blessed with a few mated pairs of Loons. The biggest smile comes when we see Mama and Papa swimming with the chcks up on their backs. We feed all year around and enjoy everything from the smallest hummingbird to the huge Pileated Woodpeckers.

Amazing Birds - The American Dipper - YouTube

I picked up my Dipper on a small stream in Utah at the base of the Uintahs. My life list is sort of a combination of small notebooks and my memories. I better get more organized. The way my memory's going, every bird I see will soon be a new one.

Black-capped Chickadees and wild turkey poults. :)

I occasionally whistle back to the former when they do their two-note "bee bay" call.

These guys should be back in the next few weeks...

Chick a dee dee dee , chick a dee dee dee
I've sat for countless hours over the years in big deer woods observing these comical little birds. One of my favorites, for sure.
