What do people do with a $4,000 1911?

I once spoke to a detective after noticing he was carrying a nighthawk 1911 or it may have been a Wilson. Anyway I asked him his opinion of Kimber. He basically told me that Kimber was a great 1911 and very reliable but he has had a few problems with their reliability in the past and he decided to buy the best most reliable weapon he could as his life depends on it daily. If I was working in law enforcement i would buy what has been proven to be the best most reliable carry weapon I could. Your life is priceless. I have a CDP Kimber and a J frame Smith. I carry both and have found both to be reliable. But if I was in law enforcement I would buy the best and practice with it very often.

I own a few 1911's, but don't own a $4,000 unit. If I were to buy a $4,000 1911, I would shoot it until it was worth $400.

Funnily enough, I've bought some highly worked over Govn't Models for a tiny fraction of what the previous owner spent having the work done. Briley barreled, accurailed, hand checkered, Wilson night sighted, etc., etc. Stainless Colt is one of my favorites. At the time you couldn't get such a thing new, and the work is excellent.

Which brings up another point. I applaud the folk that can command such prices for their wares. Generally small shops with great equipment and/or craftsmen.

I had a $3K+ M1911 made for me about 20 years ago or so. People thought I was nuts for getting it, until they shot it. Then they could see why I had it. Once I stopped shooting competition I sold it. Now just rely on my Colt Gold CUP Series 70 National Match in .45 ACP with a Colt .22 Conversion Unit. Try one, you'll probably like it.......

The $4000.00 Gun

Bad guys might consider it an honor to be shot with a $4000.00 gun. They get bragging rights and increased stature in the eyes of their fellow inmates if they survive the honor and land in prison.

Brag.....................I've got one .....naa na na nana!!!!!

Spoofing a bit...... first; competition guns are a whole other world.

In College the School supplied each of us about $1500 worth of gear in the form of rifles, spotting scopes, sights etc....... using an on line Inflation Calculator .......that's $8,660 in today $$s.

IMHO if you can afford it; go for it....personally for me "things" are subject to a law of diminishing returns..... beyond a certain point you're spending more $$s for less return on each dollar spent .

I could afford a Rolex but I'm happy with my Seiko automatic divers watches....the Wilson Beretta's are nice guns but I'm OK with my 92F compact from 1988 and an EliteII. My ego and Id are ok with a Subaru Forester and a Nissan Frontier........though I will admit enjoying driving my wife's Beamer!!

What drives me to laughter are the folks with big $$$$ guns; that still can't shoot them worth a ______!!

Oh ya; also "street machines" with automatic transmissions; and expensive rifles with cheap Walmart scopes!!!!!!! :D

$4,000 for a 1911??? That is utterly ridiculous, I mean to say..no way, impossible, who would even possibly think in such a manner.

What the heck is the world coming to???

Now....me giving a tad under $2,000 for a Model 60 no dash (38 Spl snubbie) that probably had a MSRP of $130.00 is entirely a different matter!!! I did that because 1) It had been scratched up by Ben Shostle, 2) I have nothing to do with my money other than support local LGS and 3) as per one of the posters, my kids like peanut butter sandwiches.

When they brag about their multi-thousand dollar 1911 I always ask
if I can see it. It is usually at home in their safe. Then I get to tell
them I have a better one. An old Colt Agent I bought at a pawn shop
for $250. They ask why the old Agent is better. Because I have it
with me. And I show them. What's the point if it's too nice to carry?

I had a $2,500 Ed Brown for a while, but in keeping with my philosophy that I won't own a gun that I wouldn't shoot, I sold it and bought three others. I'm very happy . . .

(edit: added "I" before "wouldn't. Fired one magazine. Ran like a dream)

Now you've got me wondering which 5 of my guns do I need to sell to fund this thing! Actually I'm happy to have what I have, more power to those that can afford one of those beauties.

Bullseye match shooting. Standing. One hand.
50 yd X ring is ~1.65".

A 1st class hand built 1911 can do 1" @ 50 yds out of a machine rest. Plus, you need a clean and predictable 3 lb trigger. And, absolute reliability. It's gonna cost you, and you can't get that sort of performance out of the box.

That's a whole different ballgame than "minute of trashcan" groups at slingshot distances....

the same thing that the guy who pays $365 for a new ATI 1911 does!
what ever they want, its their money, and no body else's business!

that guy saving to buy the ATI is just as proud of his new pistol, as the guy with the Cabot.

there are people who earn more money than me, but the key word there is earn.

its their money why should anyone else care?

They can be functional works of art.

They are not small, hold up to 8+1, and for me, cocked and locked is more than a bit funky.

Please explain what people do with a $4,000 full size 1911.

If you have to ask ... you'll never understand no matter what anyone tries to explain.

I appreciate outstanding craftsmanship. I still take pride in the U.S.A. The 1911 belongs to the U.S.A. and an integral part of our history.

What do you do with it? Shoot it. Enjoy it. Maybe win stuff?

For a serious USPSA competitor that is pretty close to par for the course for STI custom or SVI. Especially if you add in a stack of magazines at $100 apiece.

For the safe queen folks? They can just enjoy the beauty and workmanship and feel pride in ownership. You could do worse with modern art. At least a high end 1911 holds some value.
I understand the safe queen philosophy, I do. However, I personally am not capable of the discipline of owning a gun that I don't shoot. :D
