What do you prefer in a Model 10 -- tapered or heavy barrel?

I've owned both, but absolutely love my 4 inch heavy barrel.
It just looks a little tougher.

Count me in the catagory of "I like em' both".

I really like my 10-8 3" heavy barrel for shooting, but the tapered barrel is the classic look.

I own and shoot all three (skinny, fatty, and shorty) and I shoot the heavies better, but for me it's like asking me which kid do I like the most.

I've never fired a Model 10 with a standard barrel so I can't make a comparison of shootability. That being said, a 4" Model 10 HB feels very well balanced and is more aesthetically pleasing IMHO.

I like the looks and feel of my 4" HB. I guess I better buy a tapered bbl version to make a fair comparison.

Looks like a toss up of what people like. Guess that is why both are made. My preference for both looks and shooting is the HB. It just seems to hold steadier, thus enabling me to shoot a bit more accurate.

Right now, I don't have either (stupid trades in the past for stuff I wanted more), but I have to go with many of those who have already spoken: pencil for looking at and heavy barrel for shooting. It's kind of like the difference between a K frame and a L frame when I shoot .38 special: however much I prefer the looks of a K frame, I shoot more accurately with a heavier gun.

Heavy for me...... but I do kinda lust after a long barrel standard......it's just a classy looking revolver.

My 10-6, fired but mint, circa 66-67. The pic does this gun no justice. The polishing/blue finish is amazing for a run of the mill production revolver. It is beautiful.

I just picked up a model 10-5 pencil barrel and it is pretty darned sweet. These really seem to grow on you. Guess I'll have to edit my preference to "both".

My New Acquisition

Hello All,

I traded a SIG P-6 for this unfired, in the box model 10-6 at a local gun show this weekend. The serial number puts it around 1975-76. I have a 10-5 with a thin barrel also. I like them both but I like the looks of the heavy barrel better.

The tapered barrel has a certain elegance to it that I find appealing. To actually shoot I usually like heavier barrels for the slight extra bit of recoil dampening and slightly muzzle heavy balance.

Aloha,

I'll take them any way I find them. Can Never have enough M-10, 13,64, and 65s.

I teach NRA basic handgun and lots of beginning shooter like the feel and balance of the HB 3" guns. Especially when shooting 38 out of the 357 versions.

Plus they are our "house" guns just in case.

Great trade kixonrt66!

I suppose my 1971 Model 10-6 once looked like that one.

Here it is as I'm now wearing it.

I'm all about shooting, less about looks. I prefer a 3" HB, 4" HB, even out to 6-6.5" a straight taper heavier barrel (like on my 1955 Target. Even my 3" 36 in HB... just called out to me. These just have the right balance for me. To me, the differance in weight is negligible in a proper holster.

Exceptions... 22/32 kit gun, 32

For me, the standard barrels point better; the heavy barrels shoot better. But my favorite Model 10 is a 3" 10-8 that looks just like the 3-incher in OIF2's photo, complete with a black Tyler-T. 'Cept my 10-8 has a pinned barrel. :)
