What Does "Tactical" Mean To You?

Unfortunately, when I hear "Tactical" I immediately think expensive, gimmicky and largely inaccurate....... much like "Zombie" anything.

Tactical means black (or "coyote tan" these days) and overpriced. It's became nothing more than a bit a jargon and a marketing ploy.

In reality being tactical is about the software not the hardware. You can be tactical with a lever gun and a revolver and you can be a complete cluster with the latest plastic fantastic and AR.

To be truly tactical... requires that your gear have the basic characteristics of what it is to be tactical...

1. Black
2. Plastic... LOTS of plastic.
3. Rails... LOTS of rails.
4. Batteries.
5. Muzzle device... fake or real... (fake is better)

Without these fundamental characteristics... you just ain't tactical.

This IS tactical.

The over-use of the word 'tactical' in the common vernacular outside of the military, to me, means we have been in a constant state of conflict for far too long.

The clippy thingy is for the static line... low altitude tactical dog training.

AHA! I GOT IT! It's one of those Bluetooth earpieces! I sure am slow. :(

I see it's in Tactical Black. Just the thing for hands free wireless operation. All the high speed low drag Elite Tactical Operators are using 'em. I'm sure it also comes in handy for maintaining comms while utilizing the high strength Tactical baggies. :D

Right. Shooting and texting at the same...

Here's my late night tactical gear.

Wanna guess what it's for?...

To me, it means a bunch of 'cool' stuff for the soldier-of-fortune wanna be. I'm interested in target shooting, not combat. I haven't seen any tactical gear for bullseye shooters yet.

Oh, it's out there. But the buyers aren't really bullseye shooters. Although they got all the gear. Flat black or cammo of course. (Plus a gilly suit) Generaly they prefer to call themselves "tactical snipers."

hunting Crawfish?

Pretty close in description. But -

Scorpions. Desert bark scorpions. They're all over Phoenix "Oh really? We don't seem to have them at our house" - Yes you do!

The smaller, fatter torch is a UV blacklight. Shine it on the scorp's and they glow zombie green. Squish 'em with the huge roach clip then drop their dead body into a nearby black widow's web.

About 9 months out of the year I can walk out around our property any time after dark and kill 3-4 of them. I could then come back an hour later and find more if I was so inclined. They're especially fond of the tiny cracks and joints in concrete block walls.

They've lived here for 385 million years.

Interesting, Sarge. How mean is the sting of those critters? Must be fairly impressive if you keep black widows around to eat the remains! :D

Hurts like heck, according to my girlfriend who was stung on the hand by one crawling under her pillow.

Incredibly painful, light headed, metalic taste in your mouth, lasts 2-3-4 hours, then it's just a puncture wound (infection possibility etc) according to the experts. Bark scorpion is the most deadly but even then only like 2 people died from it in the last few decades. Mostly if they're allergic, I think. Bark scorpions are the only ones that can crawl up vertical walls. Comforting to know that they might be on your ceiling while you sleep. They like to come inside in the fall.

If I had to rank what I'd like to get bit/stung by in the desert, I think I'd pick (least problems to most problems) -

1) Gila Monster (bites but no long lasting toxic problems, but you have to physically pull him off of you)

2) Scorpion (toxic but no local tissue damage)

3) Black Widow (local tissue necrosis seems typical and lots of bites are on the hand, just where I don't want to lose mobility)

4) Rattlesnake (local gross tissue necrosis, maybe nerve damage, muscle atrophy etc, perhaps most expensive treatment. Anti-venom is $25,000 per injection, you typically require ten injections. That's not a typo)

5) Human (probably hardest to shake off. That whole vampire problem to deal with)

I've come face to face with them all and so far have been able to avoid their sting/bite...

I thought you were gonna say the 38 was for the porcupine and the roachclip is to remove the quills from tactidog :p

Being literal, it is a means of accomplishing the mission, whether taking a terrain feature or winning a battle. Today, it has be *******ized to mean military or quasi-military. Just like any rifle that is black or camouflage colored, semi-automatic and holds more than five rounds must be an assault rifle.

I am not happy seeing regular Patrol Officers dressed like SWAT (at least in South Florida). Exterior vests, thigh holsters, etc. What's up with that? I was on the job for 25+ years and don't agree with that trend.

It is fashionable in some law LE organizations try to imitate the military spec ops. I think it is called the militarization of the American Police. Some also use armored vehicles to serve warrants. The Federal government is giving mine resistant armored vehicles away almost free. I read recently here in Texas, the Dallas Co. Sheriff's office got a armored vehicle from the feds. All they had to do was pay to transport it from Ft. Hood to Dallas Co. In the news article, according to the Sheriff, the dept. obtained the vehicle to serve warrants.

I think of tactical as combination of gear for a particular purpose. And of course it must always be black.

Anyone want to take a guess what mission this tactical gear if for? :D

The word Tactical is also used to check for any sign of life when an old curmudgeon is found face down in the dirt. If there is no sign of life after saying the word Tactical, try Tacticool... works better than a set of defib paddles.
