What Good Is A K Frame?

Good timing for this post. I'm in the process of deciding what to do with my K frame M66-8 with 4" barrel. Great revolver with smooth trigger, 4# SA pull and solid lock up. Problem is I just don't shoot it well. I've tried several different grips adjusted sights, etc. I've had it for six years can't get satisfactory hits (steel and targets) with it. On the other hand I have a 686+ 3" that I simply pick up, shoot and hit what I aim at almost effortlessly.

Makes no sense. I should be more accurate with the M66, but I'm not. Beginning to question why I'm keeping the 66 around.

My personal favorites are the K-22 models. My K-22 Combat Master Piece in particular.

I have a '50s vintage K-22 that I bought just to have an example of the old skool S&W polish & bluing. It had some dawgawful MOP stocks on it and just enough honest wear on it to knock it out of the mega $$$ collectibles market... but the finish that is there is stunning!

If your a S&W owner. K frame should be included.

Why not own one of each frame? Most guns today will be worth more in the future.

K-frames are excellent examples of 20th Century American craftsmanship. There were millions built, and it's still possible to find them in great condition for semi-reasonable prices.

My oldest K frame shipped in 1920, the newest in 2019, and neither were the first, nor the last K frame gun. The fact that a gun has endured in the same basic form for over 100 years should say something...

For shooting fast, double action... it's pretty hard to beat a 3-4" round butt K. For serious target shooting, it doesn't get much better than a 6" K... in .38 or .22. For a dependable, hard hitting backpaking or camping gun, there's few matches for a 4" M66.

A K can't measure up to modern poly framed autos if your metric is firepower in a compact package, but there's still plenty of uses where K still stands for "King". :D

I'll tell you what, my mom owned and shot her 15-2. She had good aim, too! I ended up giving her gun to my mother in law, after my mom passed. It's a gun that just about anybody can handle the recoil of...YMMV.

As promised here are a couple of pictures of my Model 10-6. Originally with a 4" heavy bbl (yes, I've kept it, as well as the wood grips,) with the Pachmeyer presentation grips. Perfect balance in the hand and to the eye imho. I tried it with the gripper panels but it just didn't look right. Llance
