They still make the II serrated.

Good steel is the criteria. Lots of cheap Chinese stuff, but no idea who has good steel AND hardened properly.

It’s larger than the Mark I, but smaller than the Mark II; my favorite in that category is the Applegate-Fairnbairn fixed blade now made by Böker. Earlier versions by Al Mar and Blackjack are collector items now; I think Gerber still makes the folder.

I have the same commemorative set. Bought mine to use and have no idea where the display plaque is stashed.

Mine are serial numbered 0728, purchased in Alabama, about 40 sets earlier than yours.
I guess mine was bought in 97’..... seems about right. I have no idea as to price paid. Do you remember?

Mark IIs are $75 on Amazon. 420HC steel?????????

FWIW ...... depending on your 'need"

I personally would rather have a 7" K-bar ($75)or better yet is a Ka-bar "Extreme" ($120) with D2 steel.

A nice general purpose/utility knife are the 5" short Ka-bar or their Mark I Deck knife

That picture is actually off the web  . I don‘t have the set, I looked at one once but the guy wanted too much. I separately have the Gerber A-F folder and the fixed Böker A-F Black in the first photo (which is standard issue to the German KSK special forces).

I still have one, in good shape, in the sheath...somewhere.
Got it during jump skool in 1981, before I knew what a good
field knife was. :D

It was replaced by a Camillus Air Force survival (?) knife.
Used that puppy till the leather sheath rotted apart, then
stuck it in a bayonet sheath.

I have a Gerber Mark I wasp waist from late ‘60s that’s ridden a few miles in the USMC... couldn’t afford a Randall.. also have a K-Bar carried in the Pacific campaigns and a Navy K-Bar that’s never been sharpened...WWII issue..along with a Robeson Wood handle that’s not in good shape but serviceable.. lots of sharpening over time

A good site to run the numbers on Gerber and other makers is bladehq.com.
Such as where made? China-246, US-151, Finland -5, Taiwan -2.
Taiwan used to be way higher. Finland? Yes, they are owned by a Finn Co.
Steel? a bunch.
Best one? CPM-S30V, used in 41 knives, all US Made.
SUPER STEEL!
Their Steels are all over the place.
The Better Steels cost more money and are usually only on the more expensive Blades.
Hold on- The Finland made knives, they ain't Knives!
Hatchets and small axes.

I have the Gerber MKI, MKII and the boot knife. Think Gerber has a page on their website where you can date your knife by serial number. Have no idea what they would cost today. Frank

That's the Defender II. It was created in response to the negative image of the Mark II as a fighting knife. They also made a Defender I, I'll post a pic if I can find one.

Found a pic of my Gerbers, all USA made older knives. From top to bottom:
Mark II
Defender I

I carried a Gerber Guardian clipped to my ALICE suspenders, upside down, in the 1980's, both in CONUS and in the ROK. It was accessible to either hand.

Small enough to not attract unwarranted attention in the modern all volunteer Army, but still a handy size.

I believe the knives you’re calling Defender are actually Command knives. I have a Command II as well. They produced fewer of the Command’s than the MK’s.

You’ll find a lot of info on these here: GERBER KNIVES SIMILAR TO THE MARK II&trade

I’ve owned a number of MK II’s over theirs, but sold them all. There’s a wealth of information here: GERBER MARK II™ KNIVES
