After only 20 rounds down the barrel today the pin in front of the takedown lever worked it's way out. I noticed it and pushed it back in. 30 rounds later and it was out again. Anyone know the official name for this part so I can contact S&W. Hopefully they will send me one, I don't know why it would need to send it in for this. Thanks in advance.

It's the locking block pin. It's a coil type pin.

Did you push it in by hand?

I used the flat screw driver on my knife at the range to push it level with the frame. The last 30 rounds, when it came out I brought it home and used a screw driver again. It just pushes in easily, can't do it by hand but easily with something flat.

Mine does the same thing ever since I drifted it out to do the Apex carry kit install. I know you're not supposed to re-use roll pins, but I haven't found a replacement for it yet.

I figured it wasn't a big deal but worth contacting S&W and see if they'd ship me a new one. Can't hurt to ask. Thanks all for the info.

They'll send you one, just make sure they send you a trigger block coil pin and not a trigger pivot pin (they did that to me once). I bought replacement pins from McMaster Carr because the forward pin starts to come apart around 40K rounds. I have a post on that somewhere on this site;). In the meantime you could push the pin partway out, put some thread locker (or fingernail polish) on the pin and push it back in and let it set up. That normally does the trick.

I have the same problem with the pin just behind this one (still under the takedown lever). How far can these pins be pushed out, before locktight is added?

The pin under the takedown lever is the trigger pivot pin and is held in place by an internal spring. If it's coming out there is something else wrong.

Bkreutz, thank you very much for the info on the pivot spring. I didn't know the function of the pin.

All you have to do is remove the pin and tap each end of it with a center punch to spread it out a little.
Re-install, problem solved.
