What Is The Point Of A 40 And 45 Cal Auto In A Revolver?

How about hunting? Anyone here load or buy a hot 45 acp to hunt with? When maxed out performance wise what are the numbers?

I have a Ruger Vaquero with dual .38/40 and .40 S&W cylinders. Ballistically, the 180 gr loadings are nominally equivalent between both rounds, allowing me MUCH cheaper general range practice with the .40 cylinder.

What are you going to hunt with a "maxed out 45 ACP." Here in Indiana handguns are legal for Deer. Some handguns that is. .44 Magnum and .45 Colt are legal calibers, .45 ACP is not. .45 ACP in a revolver can never be the equal of the longer cased rounds.

Here he could use a 45 acp to hunt whatever. In fact he could legally use a 22 firing 22 shorts for elk or moose. Not that I would advice that.

Not everywhere has your states laws, which IMHO are ridiculous. Anyone who has the ability to bow hunt, where the ranges are under 50 yards could head shoot a deer with a decent 22lr setup and make repeated 1 shot kills. I have shot beeves in the head with a 22 and they collapse right there. I have also seen poorly shot deer with high powered 30 cal bullets go a long ways. The shooter makes far and away more difference than the gun or round fired

But, that aside, some guys regularly fire 45 supers in their model 25s and get 1100fps with 230 gr bullets, which figures out to over 600ftlb which is more ME than any factory 45 colt where a 255 at 900fps has 450 ft lb. Even a 45acp+P 230gr rounds have more energy that a factory 45 colt.

My 45 colt loads are another story. 255gr slugs at 1100fps works out to about 680 ft lb

Why would anyone who believes a 9mm is sufficient for self defense, where you life is on the line, believe a 45acp wouldn't work on deer? 200# man 200# deer

I DO BELIEVE IN USING ENOUGH GUN,. But, that difference from hunter to hunter, method to method. An excellent shot, who is in a stand or is a great stalker can make 1 shot kills with a 22. Some people shouldn't hunt even with a 460 Wetherby. Legislators can't legislate skill or sportsmanship

I was thinking deer. Steelslaver summed up my thoughts on the matter. I'm not a 45 guy. That's why I asked.

I have never understood the rimless in a revolver thing, and not a single one of these replies changes that, especially as a reloader.

There's nothing a .45 acp can do that a .45 Colt can't, roll crimps included.

Moon clips? You can spend your time stuffing those or stuffing a cylinder.

And I personally don't like the longer forcing cones that are usually found on revolvers chambered for the shorter cartridges.

Cheers.

The deer hunting regulations vary widely from state to state. With so many new and used revolvers available there's no reason to chance using an illegal ctg.

Different strokes for different strokes. Leaves more for the rest of us

When I go to the range with an acp gun, I take an ammo box that has 12 dowels in it and each dowel has 4 loaded clips for a total of 288 rounds. I also bring an empty coffee can. Emptied brass still in clips goes in coffee can.

I can set in my easy chair at home and unload 3 or 4 clips a minute with my tool. Later I can set another tool and load 3 or 4 clips a minute without rushing. In fact I can fill a clip about as fast as a speed loader, Clip in place, 6 rounds in the slot, twist the handle and done. Really not much difference than loading magazines, but 100 magazines for any of the 1911s I own would cost me about $3000. 100 clips cost less than $200. Just a small part of my reloading process.

Also no reason not to read and understand the regulations for each state and the region of the state your hunting in.

I will say that our regulations have become more complicated as time has gone on, but a lot of that deals with the various restrictions as to a which animals are legal to take in each of the over 200 districts split up into 7 regions and the legal boundaries of such districts.

When I first started hunting 68 years ago. a big game license cost $8 and include 2 deer, 1 elk and 1 black bear. Any 2 deer, any elk or any bear, no matter where in the state they were standing. Birds were another buck as was an antelope which you had to draw for.

Now the regulations have about 40 pages.

NY's regs are a quagmire!!! State is divided into DMUs. Deer Management units. Doe permits are a lottery. Some units there are extras and you can buy them. Other units they are like unicorns. Rifle use is managed by County. If you go 8-10 miles south of Buffalo NY it becomes hilly and rural. But you cannot use a rifle in Erie County. There are counties north of Buffalo along Lake Ontario where the terrain is as flat as my living room floor. But you can use a rifle…….. it's no wonder people make mistakes.

There is also the .40 cal. L frame 646. It's like a 3/4 size .45 ACP. Lighter, smaller, easier to carry, still gets the job done. I have 2 of them, a 4" and a 6" and shoot both quite a bit. The 4" is my IDPA gun and works great for that. The 6" is a tack driver at longer distances.
