Could it be Professional and Occupational Licensing? Perhaps the pistol is certified for Law Enforcement or Military use.

Where did you buy the pistol? Did you buy it new in the box?

Maybe a call to S&W is in order. I would be interested in what you learn.

Bought it at a academy sports in Jackson MS. I'm going to call s&w tomorrow. I already called them once to find the manufacture date of the gun which was 4/16. They also said it was supposed to go overseas?? I have no clue. I'm going to ask some questions tomorrow. Don't get me wrong, I like the gun. Just curious. It came in a white box.

From the other thread about these M&P's:
The pistols ordered by the Belgium Federal Police were based upon the well established M&P platform, which has been adopted by hundreds of police agencies and has achieved popularity with consumers as well. The M&P9 pistols were built to meet the exact specifications set forth by the police agency. Enhanced features included luminescent sights, a manual thumb safety with on/off red dot indicator, and a raised loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide that could be felt by hand. The M&P9 pistols retained the original design features and were supplied with two 17-round magazines along with cleaning materials.
So her is the explonation. Confirmed by s&w customer service. Btw Im getting the free plugs to make the safety disappear in the mail soon. For free.

That's mine. Luminescent sights, red dot indicator on the thump safety, raised loaded indicator. The sights surprised me. I leave my gun on the nightstand next to my bed. When I turned off the lights, 3 luminescent eyes were staring back at me.

These are on the older style M&P's not the newer model M&P, I looked at one like it when I went to buy my full size M&P at the Academy store in Cape Girardeau MO. I thought about buying it but didn't because I prefered the Melonite finish instead of its PVD finish, the biggest deal breaker on that one for me was that it has a LCI that pops up on top of the slide.

This looks like surplus gun that was destined to be in service with the Belgium Police but we made more than they needed so we offered them up for sale in the US.  The numbers that you see are markings that would have been identification markings for the police departments purposes

Called s&w. Found out the skinny from customer service. Interesting.

Yep that happens from time to time. I have a Glock 19 that went the opposite way. It's an old Gen 2 with Austrian proofs. It was destined for the Austrian police but at the time there were not enough G19s in the US to keep up with demand so a lot of those Austrian ones were brought here
