what is your avorite S&W semi auto?

I admired the solid construction and monotonous reliability of the .45 ACP S&W pistols from the first Model 645 I saw and bought, s/n TBR95XX, purchasing it on Sept. 12, 1988.

I recognized the improvements S&W made with the Model 4506 and also bought the first one I saw, s/n AIP98XX, adjustable sights, I bought in January, 1990.

Still, I was a 1911 man at heart. One day in October, 1998, my dealer showed me a Model 945, the first version, 5 inch with the 'fish scale' slide serrations and Bomar sights, and there it was, a pistol of the same rugged reliability of the earlier steel frame S&W .45's with the control systems and design features of the 1911, finished with distinctive style and high quality components from trusted outside vendors. Mine, s/n RSA00XX, shoots as good as it looks.

If I could only keep one big bore semiautomatic pistol, the choice would be simple, the strong, slick, smooth and scenic Model 945.

The one I carry the most is a toss up between the DAO 3953 and the 4053. They both lay flat, even when only covered by a T-shirt. No external safeties, decockers to get snagged when drawn. The 3953 does have a small, VERY small advantage in the size department.

Class III

Thanks again for your input, now will you tell me whether or not a pair of grips off a Model 5906 will fit a 659 with the insert(backstrap) removed. It looks like it would work.
Thanks

My favorite is the 4506. Smooth shooting .45ACP, the heavy steel frame eats up almost all the recoil. Very accurate, very reliable. Good looking pistol to boot.

If I were limited to one though, for CCW, it would be my SW99 in 9mm. high cap, accurate, and more concealable than my 4506.

My M 41 with 5.5 barrel is my all time favorite of all brands of autos, well respected in the target community, and a joy to own and shoot.

It would have to be the very first gun I bought. Model 4013 TSW. Early 90's no rail. Excellent gun, very accurate.

My favorite is my only semi-auto, my 4053TSW. This is the best .40 platform I have ever dealt with, great trigger, smooth recoil, very accurate, and boring in it's reliability. :)

The one I carry the most is my 3913 ,now that I've paid off my house I can spring for a good holster for my 1066 and/or my 4026 .

Model 41 5.5". Owned mine for nearly 30 years, ain't going nowhere.
I like some of the others in the third generation line, but not quite enough to see them as top dogs.
At the rate I'm accumulating M&Ps and as well thought out as I think they are, they are rapidly becoming one of my favorite pistols ever.

I would have said my 1006. I love that gun. Lately I have been carrying my old single stack 4013 and it just feels right. I will have to give it up next month when we are required to carry our issued glock 22/23 pistols. a sad day for me.

I was insistent on "No Tactical Tupperware"and never owning a semi auto that required the same motion to make it go BOOM to field strip .Another requirement was that it must have a magazine disconnect. This may seem like overkill but I know too many people who had a accidental discharge while cleaning.

Man, when someone has an "accidental discharge" while "cleaning" a gun isn't following basic safety instructions. It's a NEGLIGENT discharge. Especially since the bullet in the loaded magazine tends to be in the way of the borebrush.

Heh. Still, I like your other reasons for choosing the CS9. Good little guns!

For a long time my only autos were 1911's and a Ruger .22. A while back I got a 3913 and every time I shoot it I like it more and more. I just picked up a pair of 3953's. Haven't shot them yet but it already looks like there will be competition for the 'favorite' label.

Favorite S & W semi auto

Sgt Preston here. My PC 945 x 5" is simply the greatest gun I've ever fired. It is dead nuts accurate, easy to disassemble & clean. I have fired a lot of upper ends 1911's (= lots more $$) & nothing compares to my PC 945.

For me it was the 3913 first production run. I still regret trading it. Now I do have to say I am very happy with the 1911s.

I know this may sound like a broken record from previous posters above but "My Favorite Smith & Wesson Auto is... Every one I own. And I could use about 50 more. Well maybe 75 more if someone else is buying! I love to carry the 3913/3914 and 6906's but am also equally confident with my 6450, 4516 and 4046. Hopefully one day I will be able to add to this list. Oh and my current issue M&P.40C is a nice pistol too. Even if it has a polymer frame and Melonite finish.

ooooh....I have the 645 and 4506 -you have both in one!!
pics, pretty please? :D

another 3913/3914 vote

1-3913LS or my 3914, toss-up;
2-3906
3-5906

I'm going against the grain at little with this one I think--the M&P40. I owned a 5906 back in the early 1990's and although I loved the look, the sight picture, the heft and the trigger pull I couldn't shoot the thing accurately...I couldn't figure it out. I moved on to Glocks after that for 15 years or so but have since moved on (at least as far as Polymer pistols are concerned) to the M&P--it's like they took everything wrong with the Glock and fixed it. I do love classic S&W's when it comes to revolvers, but when it comes to semi-autos, I'm going for the new kid. :)

I have to put the Models 41 and 52 in a class all by themselves. Everybody who owns one just loves it and they really can't be lumped in with standard semi-autos.

As far as defensive/carry pistols, I've owned quite a few S&Ws over the years and carried most of them from time to time. I will admit to a great fondness for the 3913. Back in the day when our handgun permits had restrictions on what we could carry the 3913 was my weapon of choice.
However, once those restrictions were lifted I went with my first love for a carry pistol, the Colt Commander. :D

As far as S&Ws go, well like I said, over the years I've had a number of them. Now they're all gone except one. My all time favorite Smith & Wesson semi-auto pistol is my Model 39-2. ;)
