I admired the solid construction and monotonous reliability of the .45 ACP S&W pistols from the first Model 645 I saw and bought, s/n TBR95XX, purchasing it on Sept. 12, 1988.
I recognized the improvements S&W made with the Model 4506 and also bought the first one I saw, s/n AIP98XX, adjustable sights, I bought in January, 1990.
Still, I was a 1911 man at heart. One day in October, 1998, my dealer showed me a Model 945, the first version, 5 inch with the 'fish scale' slide serrations and Bomar sights, and there it was, a pistol of the same rugged reliability of the earlier steel frame S&W .45's with the control systems and design features of the 1911, finished with distinctive style and high quality components from trusted outside vendors. Mine, s/n RSA00XX, shoots as good as it looks.
If I could only keep one big bore semiautomatic pistol, the choice would be simple, the strong, slick, smooth and scenic Model 945.
