As a police officer,I have struggled with finding the "perfect" off duty/back up gun for most of my 28 years on the job. I have tried revolvers & pistols of all makes, models, shapes.sizes and calibers finding some fault with each one for some reason or another.

I should preface this by saying that I was a Glock "hater" until I recently transferred between jobs in my county and was issued an old Glock 22 .40 caliber. I was really despondant about carrying a Glock. But,I soon realized that I needed to get over it and learn how to shoot that ugly thing if I wanted to survive in a fight. So,I relearned everything about trigger control etc. that I ever knew and actually began to shoot it better & dare I add trust it to save my life.

Anyway, back to the topic. I was carrying a Charter Arms .44 spl w/ 3" bbl. stoked w/ 200 gr. Gold Dot HPs and an extra speedloader in a pocket holster. Then, I met the Glock 33. It carries 9 + 1 in .357 Sig. The Glock ads don't call it a "pocket rocket" without good reason. It is a beast. However, with practice, it is managable. The ballistics are amazing. This combo is virtually equal to a .357 mag w/ a 4" bbl. with simiar loadings. I use 124 gr Hornady hollow points that leave the bbl. @ 1350 fps.

Maybe the search is over! :)

When I first decided to carry concealed I had certain parameters my concealed firearm had to meet. I wanted something reliable, can be pocket carried when needed, was in a caliber used by law enforcement and was fun to shoot lots at the range. I had decided on a 642/442 and coincidently someone at work had a 442 they bought in 1994, shot once, cleaned and put in a drawer. I bought it, made a few holsters and carry it daily.

My model 37 w/bobbed hammer and clipdraw. Buffalo Bore 158gr SWC HC.
It carries very securely, draws quickly and I point shoot accurately with it.
.38special is legal in all the locations I am called on to work.

For years I carred off duty a k or j frame with speedloader. Here, lately, I've been practicing with and carrying my S&W M&P 40c with an extra mag.

I'm a die hard revolver freak but I can't argue with the tactical superiority of a bottomfeeder. 11 rounds of 40 in the weapon and an extra ten on the belt and they don't take up any more space than a K frame, and the weight is equal to a K frame.

I have carried all kinds of handguns CC for over 45 years.
PPK .380, Colt 1917 .45 ACP cut down, Colt Commander, M19 2.5", M36 2" & 3", Kimber Pro carry II, M21, M64 2", Colt Cobra and some I can't remember.
Only thing I keep coming back to is a revolver is safe & sure & no remembering if the safety is on or not.
The XD .45 ACP is too big for CC & just sits in the night stand draw.
Bottom line is I feel just as secure with a large caliber revolver as with any semi-auto made.
If my M21 .44 Spl lets me down, so be it.
But lets see what the other guy looks like.

When I could or when I can it is and always will be my Glock 27!

Colt Cobra loaded with BB 158 grain LSWHP and more recently my new S&W Model 65 3" loaded with Remington 125 grain Golden Sabers....I'm just a revolver guy. Have not used a Glock since I retired two years ago.

For me a pocket gun is an old p-64 very reliable and just under 9mm with bufflo bore ammo, holster gun I just got a Kahr CW45 new to me but from all the reviews and from handling it fells good and very reliable cnan't beat .45 cal.

Either my 3913 or my Model 36 and I am good to go! Have many to choose from, but those two always accompany me in my travels...on occasion my Colt Officers Model or my Star Firestar's show to give the others a vacation.

Then again, my M66 2.5 inch shows up and then....oh hell. carry, use and be proficient with ALL of them!

my rotation includes my .357 revolver loaded with hornady 158gr jhp , my sigma loaded with hornady critical duty 175 gr jhp, or my SD9 loaded with hornady critical duty

To start out with, I am a Retired HillBilly who lives in the sticks. My closest town, where I used to be Police Chief "After Retirement Job" is 10 miles away and has a population of a little over 400. The big city is the other directing 17 miles. It has a population of 2200 or so. It has a Wal Mart, Pawn & Gun, Suit Shop, numerous Restaurants, etc. We have all the Cultural stuff covered also, we have an Indoor Movie Theater and a Drive In Theater, High School Foot Ball, Basket Ball, and Baseball Games. We have it all.

The closest thing we have to Gang Activity is the 4H or FFA kids showing up in force for some activity or other like showing their cattle at the Fair Grounds. Driving into town the other day I came up behind a pickup truck with an FFA Trap Team custom decal in the back window.

You should have the picture my now. I live real close to Mayberry. When I get approached by gang members, they are normally asking me questions about the Sportsmans Club. I have been Club President since most of their parents were shooting Trap & Skeet in FFA or 4H.

I have a Concealed Carry Rotation. All but One are Revolvers. I do have a Custom Colt 1911 Barbecue Gun, I just don't carry it much since I am retired.
In the Summer Time I pretty much carry 357 Magnums or 38 Specials. Going to Church or other locations where I need to carry small I will carry my S&W 442 Pro Moon Clip. I have a Lobo Model 1 Pancake Belt Holster for my main method of carry. I also have a Nemisis and a JR Roo Pocket Holster. I never carry in a pants pocket. The pocket holsters are in inside jacket, vest, or coat pockets. On the belt I will carry either one or two J Frame 38 Moon Clips in a California Competition Works Spring Steel J Frame Carrier. When I go to pocket carry I switch to Tuff Products Quick Strips for my reloads.

Small, and Light Weight
Positive Extraction of all 5 rounds in the Moon Clip
Quick Reload using the Moon Clip
The moon clips carry in a small area on the belt in the Shoot A Moon Spring Steel Carriers.
The 442 Pro Moon Clip will still reload with Quick Strips, Speedloaders or Manually.

When I can carry bigger guns my 3" S&W 66-2 is my favorite. I normally have Ron Power work on my revolvers. This one had been worked on by someone almost as good as Ron before I got it. It is DAO with S&W Factory DAO Parts. The Chambers are Chamfered, Ball Loc, Butter Smooth trigger stroke. The cylinder spins like it is on roller bearings. Perfect Cylinder Alignment, Perfect Barrel Gap. It has a Black Blade front sight with a solid Black Back Sight. The Sight Pin finish on the end is a perfect match to the bead blast finish on the rest of the front sight. Considering a couple things like the Factory DAO Parts and the Special Order Front Sight looks to be Factory Original on the gun. I am wondering if it was a Special Order S&W Custom Shop Gun.
Anyway this is my favorite Summer Time Carry Revolver. I think I could say it is My Favorite Concealed Carry Revolver.

The 3" barrel K Frame Round Butt is a good compromise size to carry concealed.
It has a Full Stroke Ejector Rod for positive extraction during a reload.
It is a K Frame, so Safariland Comp I, II, and III Speedloaders will work with it.
I carry my Comp II Speedloaders in the Safariland CD-2 Spring Steel Carrier, small and compact.
It has a Great DA Trigger Pull
This is the most SHOOTABLE revolver that I Conceal Carry.

Remember the part about being a HillBilly and Carrying a 38/357 in the Summer. I Summer Carry something that will shoot 38 Special because I will normally have a couple Shot Shells up front for snakes when I am not headed to town in the Summer.

I also carry my K Frame 2-1/2" 315 Night Guard some. The 3" 66 has a Full Length Ejector Rod giving it the edge over the 315 on a reload. The 66 is quicker on follow up shots also. The 315 being light also recoils harder than the Steel 66 making it a little slower on follow up shots. Verified by my Times shooting both in Outlaw IDPA Matches.

Light and easy to carry
Great Sights, XS 24/7 Tritium Front and Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty Rear
K Frame so it uses the same speedloaders and carriers as the 66.
More SHOOTABLE than any lighter weight revolver.

Winter Time Carry I add a couple more to the rotation.

When the Copperheads, and Cotton mouths are sleeping through the Winter Months, and I have my Shot Shells put away for the season I add a couple more revolvers to the Rotation.

In the winter I will carry my 3" 625 Power Custom Combat some. This one has had a Full Length Ejector Rod installed. It has also been rechambered for 460 Rolland.
I carry it in a Lobo Enhanced Pancake at 4 O Clock. I also carry a couple spare moon clips in California Competition Works Moon Clip Carriers. Great Revolver.

It will shoot 45acp, 45AR, 45 acp +p, 45 Super and 460 Rolland, so it has all the power you might need for self defense.
Uses Moon Clips so ejection is positive, and the reload is quick.
It now has Full Length Ejector Stroke, for positive ejection.
It is a Power Custom Combat Revolver, so it runs like a Swiss Watch.
A little large, but very Shootable, and Potent.

I also carry my Light Weight N Frame 10mm some. A Bone Stock 310 Night Guard. Maby not totally bone stock it does have a set of S&W Altamont Checkered Walnut Boot Grips on it. Again a couple spare moon clips carried in a California Competition Works 7 Shot 686 Moon Clip Carriers.

This revolver has the most power for the light weight of any I own.
It will shoot 40 S&W or the nastiest 10mm you can find.
It again uses moon clips for positive Ejection.
It uses Shoot A Moon Spring Steel Moon Clip Carriers which are small and compact.
It has a 24/7 Tritium Front Sight and a Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty Rear Sight.
Due to the light weight it feels like you are carrying a 2" K Frame. This is hard to explain until you belt carry one.
This was probably the Best of the Night Guard Series, followed by the 325NG.
Great Revolver

The 5 above are probably my favorites, I do carry others also.

I'm not a cop , so you have a different prospective. But strictly as a back-up , you might want to consider a Kel-Tec or Ruger .380. Small and light (you guys carry a lot of stuff as is) , yet packs a decent punch. I've shown mine to other cops who liked it.

And even though I have any number of more 'combat worthy' pistols , it's what I carry close to 100% of the time.

I owned a 357M&P full size but ended up selling it. First problem was that it had ejection problems, but that wasn't a big deal i could have sent it to S&W for repairs. Second problem was that it had the mag release safety. Again not a deal breaker just annoying. The biggest problem become the cost of practice ammo. So i sold it.

I was like you, anti Glock, until last year. An LGS was running black friday specials on used police guns. I got a G19 with night sights and 2 mags for $350. I thought i wouldn't carry it but it would be nice to have a reliable tool at home just in case! Well its now my favorite EDC and has been for a long time

I carry a long slide .40 Glock at work and a Glock 23 off duty. Dept provides duty and practice ammo.

I rotate a couple back ups that include.
M&P 340- thats always with me at work.

I keep a j-frame with me all the time. 642 or LCR. I put the Glock 23 on when I leave the house.

Occasionally I break out a LCP CT, or NAA mini mag when I'm down to cycling or canoe apparel.

Tried quite a few, settled on either my Shield or Bodyguard .38 wheelgun. Lately it's been the Shield. The .38's lighter, easier to conceal. That said, I'm better with the Shield should the worst ever happen.

It depends on the time of year:

Summer equals either my CS9 or 640 and my 432PD.

Winter equals 3" 386SC, 3" 29 or Glock 20 and my 432PD.

S&W Bodyguard .380 or 40c depends on the Weather, attire etc. I do find myself carrying the bg.380 more due to its size. I do have a Shield .40 ordered so that will probably also included.
