This is strictly YOUR opinion......

I have several 1st,2nd & 3rd Gen guns all in 9mm.

As I write this ,sticking with my criteria of picking only 1, it would be the...... 5946. It just carries very well & has a smooth trigger as well as being very accurate. No hammer spur is a plus for concealed carry .... snag free draw from a IWB under a loose shirt.

Best,
Charles

Have to be my CS-9. Easy cause it's the only 3rd Gen I got right now. Like the more compact models myself and this one packs easy. Is my favorite as I swapped 2 others to get it.

Tough one indeed! If I had one S&W auto, it would be a 39-2 that has been slightly modernized with better sights, upgraded internals and some choice modifications.

These mods would be tasteful and wouldn't detract from its classic lines. Such a pistol is being formulated at Karl Sokol's Vermont farm. When completed, it should be one of the penultimate S&W autos.

Not to get too far off-topic: I am VERY intrigued by the 5906 PC pistol used by Jerry Miculek on his YouTube channel. From what I gather, it's one of the 5906TSWs that was worked over by the PC for the Mexican Special Forces.

Think about it: A nearly indestructible 9mm pistol that is not only accurate (via hand-fitting and Briley bushing), but possesses many "modern" touches, while keeping its homage to the guns that went before it.

Just my $.02 worth of paltry advice...

I have a 5903 and really enjoy its combination of full size grip and slide and relatively light weight. I'd love a 5903TSW so I could hang a weapon light off of it, but I don't think I'll ever be able to track one down. I think I'd like a 5943/5943TSW for the same reasons, but I've never even seen one of them for sale (a TSW) let alone handled or shot one. Maybe I'll stumble on one one day be able to confirm that I'd like it.

Md 4506 no dash

I have three 1st gens and five 3rd gens along with a Md 52 and 41. I'm not going to consider value or condition or anything else. The best of the bunch is my 4506 no dash. It is a true pleasure to shoot with its hated square trigger guard and stock sights. The only mod was to switch to Hogue rubber. I LOVE THIS GUN! Get one while you can.

"Penultimate" is a 25-cent word that means "next to last." So while I hope you come up with a fantastic pistol, I -really- hope it is not the next to last S&W pistol ever. ;)

My easy pick is my 845, but I don't think that's fair because the 845 is very rare and basically hand-built. And that would make me want to defer to my Model 52-2, but that one is pretty much the SAME way. Both of these pistols are, well, ridiculous.

In the spirit of the thread, I'll take a production S&W pistol as my favorite -- it certainly was before I got those two above.

My S&W 745 fits that bill. It's a later model, non-IPSC Anniv pistol, shipped with a fixed rear sight that a previous owner swapped out for an adjustable. It runs flawlessly, it's extremely good lookin' and it's all grins on a range day.

639. Round trigger guard. Standard sights.
39-2 a close second.
559, tied for second.
5903, third place.
All really to close to call and this is not inclusive of all my favorite S&W autos.

Why do people ask?

What is your favorite S&W auto pistol? Why?
That's a very hard question for me to answer without me pulling a Bubba C and asking what the definition of "is" is. ;) There are so many different models and aspects to that question that it is impossible to pick just one. :o

I'd also have to admit that my absolute favorite S&W pistol of all is not yet in the collection. :( How embarrassing is that!

That said...

My sentimental favorite will always be Dad's early vintage Model 41.

The 3rd Gen I'd be least likely to ever sell is my Model 4516-1.

My favorite 3rd Gen for range use is my Model 4506 (No Dash).

My favorite for cool factor is my pre-rail Model 4013TSW

My favorite for clean looks alone is my Model 908S.

My favorite for home defense is my Model 915.

My favorite for carry is still my ratty old "used & abused" CS40.

My favorite for optimum size & fit vs. capacity is a 6906.

My favorite truck gun is... Oh wait! I don't have a truck gun! :D

But I still own more Model 3913's than anything else so maybe that's my real favorite?

And on and on and on... :(

And if we get into "honorable mentions" I'll be here all day! :p

This is easy, my 1076! I bought my 1076 because I wanted a 10mm and lucked into a good deal on a LEO trade in at my LGS. That's the gun that got me to learn more about S&W (was more of a Colt guy), join this forum, buy my S&WSC, etc... No matter how my accumulation grows and what joins it in the safe, that will always be my favorite S&W pistol.

CS9 ~ It's Enough

Have to be my CS-9...

I'll have to echo the CS-9 as my favorite S&W auto. Light and compact enough for ISW carry. Big enough with the stock Hogue grips for comfortable shooting. Easily accurate enough for it's self defense role.

I do have two more to choose from that also get very high marks for their particular niche, a 1006, and my most recent acquisition a 1076.

10mm is my choice if things would ever get serious and I will carry the 1076 if the situation allows. The 1006 is a range gun and a joy to shoot.

But for me, it's love the one that's with you.

Boy that's not easy;for pure target shooting I'll say a Model 41, for CCW 3953, for a field gun 1006. 3 is about as good as I can do!
