340 PD or 642
I have this custom 340 PD that is totally bad***. I really like carrying it in the summer when wearing shorts. Hardly notice it at all. I don't have pics of my 642 but have one without the key lock which, by the way, I had disabled on my 340PD. The model 36 in the pic belonged to my father so I simply admire it!

3 inch Ruger SP101 .357 mag, 3" S&W J Frame .38, or my Dad's old 3" & Wesson .38. This gun started life as a 6" Masterpiece K frame, and after suffering an accident was cut back to 3". I don't know who did the work, but it was done right. He carried it for 20 years as a detective, and 39+ years in retirement.
I have the model 60 stainless. I have been told it's not good practice to carry something that's never been fired. So I don't. Or it would be my ccw. I would really love to have a model 60 or 36 that's been fired so I can carry it. Although my m&p 9c will do for now.

There is a quick fix to the problem. Shoot it. Unless you are collector of guns that have never had the cylinder turned. The practice is, don't carry something you have not shot enough to feel comfortable with.

I do not use a revolver for CCW, but if I did, it would be the 642.
Revolvers are not ideal carry guns because of their heavy frames and bulging cylinder. That said, I have a S&W 640-1 in .357 magnum which is now the model 642.
It can handle 38 special or 357 mag, has no hammer spur and is fairly small. If you fire 357 mag from this snubbie, expect to be blind and deaf after your first round, and your hand will sting. I have Crimson Trace on mine. Trigger pull out of the box is stout, so I rec a Wolff reduced power rebound spring. Leave the mainspring alone and do a light smoothing of the bottom and sides of the rebound slide and the left side plate next to the hammer. Clean well and lube. Dont touch the sear faces on the hammer or trigger. You can lightly smooth the rounded edge on the top of the trigger in the back so it moves smoothly. Videos are on YouTube.
Alternatively, I'd recommend a Glock 23 or 19, Ruger LC-9, Kahr in 40 cal or 9mm, or the new Glock .380. There are other good carry guns, but I dont own them so i reserve praise to someone who does.

Lately, more often than not, I'm carrying this, my Model 29-4 3" Special.
Way to nice to carry.

I have 2 revolvers that I carry at different times. Both have Crimson Trace grips. First is a 317 with a 3" barrel. It is great for walking the dogs in the woods and benign areas. My other is a 649 for going to Springfield restaurants and not so nice areas of the valley. I have snake shot for both and frangible .38 ammo for the 649. I carry a pistol if I am not carrying the revolver.
And, maybe a shotgun, or bazooka...just kidding.

I usually carry a Shield but if I want to carry a J frame, I turn to my 640 in .357 mag, loaded with .38 +P's. I am a bit surprised to see so many people carrying wheel guns over the semi-autos. It is sparking my interest again for the J frame.

An S&W 442 is a good choice. The only drawback I found wss you cannot replace the sights. If that is your choice find another J frame with more metal on the barrel.

I never carry one of my good guns. If I should have to use the thing in some confrontation away from home and some LEA took it, I do not want to lose it. I carry an IA Rossi M88-2 which I keep well-tuned. You have to get pretty close to it to tell the difference between it and a S&W M60. I have a brother-in-law with a gun in a local sheriff's department lock-up and it's been there for going on 6-years now as the case goes through all the appeals. He'll likely never get that gun back. I'll leave my Smith's at home and will use them on my property if necessary, but not down-town or out of state. If you have to shoot somebody.....do it with a gun you don't care much about.
