What smells good?

Try opening up a can of WWII-era G.I. bore cleaner. You'll run, choking and gagging, to the nearest exit....

When I was in high school JROTC, we had lots of that stuff, provided free for us cadets as war surplus to clean our M1 rifles. Always used it outdoors - I learned to hold my breath for a long time while using it. It was truly godawful.

One night cleaning one of my gun's with Hoppes #9, I had some on my fingers and I rubbed it on the wood handle of my pocket knife, the next day at work a woman asked me if she could borrow my knife, she brought it back a little latter and said were you cleaning a gun, I said I was, she said that smell really turned her on, I think I will start making some Hoppes #9 after shave.:D

I had always used Hoppe's #9 and like many of the posters, liked the smell and associated it with shooting and good times. I didn't like the way the smell stayed on my hands for a day after use though.
For the last several years I've been using the Hoppe's Elite. Its been very effective and the smell is just about non-existent. I shoot way more lead than jacketed bullets so results may vary.

Oh my, oh my.... What have we become? We used to be rough, tough guys. Capable of anything. Now we see threads about which powder is the cleanest and which solvent smell the best!

Man up, guys! Dirty and stinky is guy stuff. Clean and sweet-smelling is girl stuff!

(just joking . . . Well, half joking)

;) ;)

Clean a carry gun with eezox and EVERYONE will know you are carrying for 100 yards around. :)
The scent never goes away.
The synthetic aqueous solvents like KG-12 have virtually no smell and dissolve copper as well or better than ammonia.
But the smell of Hoppes will always be the odor of proper gun room.

I am sure I'm one of many that's been hooked on the smell of Hoppe's since I was a kid. I also like the smell of Renaissance Wax. Does anyone else?

I like the smell of old machinery... the metal, grease, fuel... it's just great.

And gunpowder of course :D

Gunzilla is not very strong smelling, and if you drink some it won't kill you. A spokesperson told me at Camp Perry it is bitter though! I will take his word for it. Bob

I preferred the smell of CLP from my service days so much i bought some surplus when it was on sale.

I've used everything and Frog Lube products are the best in every way, it costs more but it's worth it. It's a little work using the cleaner and getting rid of the petrochemical products.
Then you heat your firearm with a hair dryer and apply Frog lube to all parts , metal, plastic and wood. It's good for everything it touches. It's like seasoning a cast iron frying pan. After 30 to 60 minutes you wipe it away. You gun won't fingerprint when you touch it. Dirt and deposits will not stick, you can easily wipe clean and apply to wear points and you're good to go again. Even when the gun dries out the heat will bring Froglube out of the pores. In sand or extreme cold you shoot it drier. Try it on a bore you have cleaned with your conventional oil. You will be amazed at how much dirt is still there.
By the way the mint smell is great. Liking the smell of Hoppes is a nostalgia thing.
Kind of like how cigar smoke reminds me of going to baseball games as a kid. 50+ years ago.
