What the heck did I find?

It's a little too late for that now Bam! :p

Go ahead... You can make fun of me for not knowing what was potentially within my grasp. :D I totally deserve it!

TTSH........ Going $350 off the reservation* = X nights sleeping on the couch?????

That's why my rule of thumb is when I see a unique gun I have to have, I find a way to make it work. If you have to sell something else to buy, layaway or CC until I've sold enough to cover it. Some guns you'll just never find on the open market again.

Beautiful Gun!!!! The fish scales are nice on this particular model. Really like the 5" barrel.

This was a very nice read. Thanks for sharing TTSH and dotdsd334.
Oddly enough, it was the fish scales that totally threw me. That's the feature that most made me question whether this was a pure factory original gun (as it turns out to be) or whether it was just some wealthy owner's idea about what a Model 1006 should look like. :) The fish scales suggested to me that it was a relatively recent customizing job of an older gun. Now, it is obvious that I was dead wrong. :(

I won't live long enough to get another golden opportunity like that. ;) But such is life. :D Just wait until I tell the good wife how badly I blew it!

No question about it... you are right! :o And a 10mm too. In Massachusetts!!! I must have been temporarily insane. :(

Still, I can't overstate how crappy and even dangerous my financial situation was back in January. It's even worse than I've let on. :( And I couldn't have gone to the good wife for a loan after she just got me a vintage Model 10-5 as a Christmas present. :o It would have killed me to have had to ask for her help. We have our boundaries. Even for a one-off custom factory S&W 10mm pistol at a relative bargain price... there was no way I was going there. :o

Go ahead Bam. :) Have your fun. :D

I deserve anything you can think up to throw at me today. :D

I "was there" when the gun came in.

Mike told you what he was told from the employee who brought it in.

Mike is the best dealer around.....he will tell you all he knows not a story.
Oh, I don't question for a second that Mike told me the story as he knew it. :o The problem is that he didn't know the real story on the gun as per Roy's letter. :( Apparently, the S&W employee (former employee I believe Mike had said) who brought it in didn't know the real story either. :o

Such a shame. :( How many of us passed on that gun thinking it was just an owner personalization project of some sort? No one knew... until now! :D

Tough loss. This forum is a great place to get information on S&Ws, but make no mistake, most people here are collectors. If you even have a suspicion that a gun is rare or desirable and you are interested in it, you better grab it when you see it. Once you put it on the forum, there are suddenly going to be many others interested in it as well. Time is not on your side. I've learned to trust my instincts, and take a "leap of faith" when needed. There's been a time or two when maybe I overpaid, but guess what? I made it up on another purchase. I've learned to buy first and post later, or withhold specifics until I'm 100% sure I don't want something. It's a better feeling to get a full PM inbox of "I'd like to purchase your..." than getting a "Like" on your post.
Just one man's opinion.

Oh yeah. :o I'm hurtin' tonight. :( Just wait until the good wife comes home and I tell her about all this. I've earned the "Big L" over this for sure. :(

But I had plenty of shots at it. I didn't lose it because I posted about it. I lost it because I was too damn suspicious that this was just an owner-customized gun (Cerakoted, for example, which I don't do) and because it was financially out of my reach without crazy extreme measures (which I was not prepared or willing to take). :(

Even today, knowing what I know now, it would have been a real troubling hardship to pull it off. Not totally impossible, but awful damn close.

I definitely agree that it wasn't ripped from your grasp. And if the funds just weren't available, no reason to beat yourself up. Something else will come along.

Yep. :) I run into a top level "must have" gun at least quarterly and end up losing the majority of them for one reason or another (usually financial). :o This one was an unusually crazy and ill-timed example, but it happens fairly regularly. Trust me, I'll get over it. :) This one may take a while, but I'll get over it. ;)

Take satisfaction in knowing it has a good home here in WI. It will live hand in hand with my NIB 1006, FBI 1076 with 15 round mag and my PC guns. It's in good company :)

My typical luck is that it would've lettered factory normal....and this was a "bubba" special. I lucked out and am tickled pink. Equally happy I found this thread. Would've never guessed.....

Uhhh, I think you are taking liberties with the use of the term "bubba" as we gun folks have taken to using the term. Your gun has terrific provenance and the letter details it beautifully but the PICTURES show quite clearly that the term "bubba" is wholly out of place with regards to this pistol.

We didn't need a factory letter to see that whoever, whenever and wherever that gun got to looking the way it does... sure did a fine job making it that way.

Well, one thing to consider is that if I had taken all the risks and financial stretches necessary to buy it, I probably would not have lettered it... certainly not right away and quite possibly never (although certain members of Team 3rd Gen might have pushed me on it pretty hard). ;)

We might never have known about it's interesting history. :D

No, it's now where it belongs. I know it's in good hands. I know it's being appreciated. Lesson learned for me. It may help the next time a special collectible gun comes along. :)

I used the term "bubba" with caution....trust me:)

Hypothetically....if this wasn't factory work it could only be described as a work of art.

I was on the fence about factory work when I saw the initial photos I got. Then I compared to my 945-1.....after that I "knew" it was factory. I'm guessing that slide work is dang near impossible to re-create!....but we will see about that too

I tell ya... a big part of the enjoyment I get from this hobby/lifestyle is the look and curb appeal. I can love & use an ugly gun, sure, and I typically won't have a lot of love for anything pretty that won't run or shoot well also.

Guess I'm just saying that provenance on this pistol would be simply a bonus for me. I'd buy it just as she looks -- just because of all the elements that came together:

--S&W
--3rd Gen
--full 5"
--10mm
--blackened gorgeousness
--obviously so rare that I've never seen another

So much to love long before a factory letter tells more.

I think a moderator should merge these threads.

Stop! Stop! You're killing me here! :o

Well, I sure didn't sleep last night... this despite the fact that the good wife didn't write the "Big L" on my forehead in permanent marker after all. She was actually reasonably sympathetic and reminded me how poorly any such big dollar gun purchase would have fared for me back in late-January. :o She's a good wife! :)

She actually remembers our discussions at the time about this gun better than I do... and how adamant I was about not taking the financial risk that this was someone's dubious or failed project gun. :( Man, was I ever wrong.

Anyway, today is a new day. I've already spent hours this morning analyzing how such a horrible mistake on my part came about... and what changes I need to make to my whole gun collecting agenda to make sure that a mistake like this one never happens again. :(

don't fret over it now TTSH ...no gun is worth that.....the best change I made in my gun buying agenda was to concentrate on quality instead of quantity ;)....your next "score" is just around the corner....get prepared for it now:D;)
