Mike probably told you the same story he told me.Small world. This 1006 is now in WI to stay.
Small enough I checked it out

If only either of us had known.

It's a little too late for that now Bam!
Go ahead... You can make fun of me for not knowing what was potentially within my grasp.I totally deserve it!

Oddly enough, it was the fish scales that totally threw me.Beautiful Gun!!!! The fish scales are nice on this particular model. Really like the 5" barrel.
This was a very nice read. Thanks for sharing TTSH and dotdsd334.
No question about it... you are right! That's why my rule of thumb is when I see a unique gun I have to have, I find a way to make it work. If you have to sell something else to buy, layaway or CC until I've sold enough to cover it. Some guns you'll just never find on the open market again.
Go ahead Bam.TTSH........ Going $350 off the reservation* = X nights sleeping on the couch?????
What is "X" ?
*Can you still say "off the reservation"????? or is it not PC?????
All kidding aside that "was" one sweet gun..... and 10mm..... you could post pictures in every "Bear Thread"

Oh, I don't question for a second that Mike told me the story as he knew it.I "was there" when the gun came in.
Mike told you what he was told from the employee who brought it in.
Mike is the best dealer around.....he will tell you all he knows not a story.
Oh yeah.Tough loss. This forum is a great place to get information on S&Ws, but make no mistake, most people here are collectors. If you even have a suspicion that a gun is rare or desirable and you are interested in it, you better grab it when you see it. Once you put it on the forum, there are suddenly going to be many others interested in it as well. Time is not on your side. I've learned to trust my instincts, and take a "leap of faith" when needed. There's been a time or two when maybe I overpaid, but guess what? I made it up on another purchase. I've learned to buy first and post later, or withhold specifics until I'm 100% sure I don't want something. It's a better feeling to get a full PM inbox of "I'd like to purchase your..." than getting a "Like" on your post.
Just one man's opinion.
Yep.I definitely agree that it wasn't ripped from your grasp. And if the funds just weren't available, no reason to beat yourself up. Something else will come along.
Yep.I run into a top level "must have" gun at least quarterly and end up losing the majority of them for one reason or another (usually financial).
This one was an unusually crazy and ill-timed example, but it happens fairly regularly. Trust me, I'll get over it.
This one may take a while, but I'll get over it.

Well, one thing to consider is that if I had taken all the risks and financial stretches necessary to buy it, I probably would not have lettered it... certainly not right away and quite possibly never (although certain members of Team 3rd Gen might have pushed me on it pretty hard).Take satisfaction in knowing it has a good home here in WI. It will live hand in hand with my NIB 1006, FBI 1076 with 15 round mag and my PC guns. It's in good company
My typical luck is that it would've lettered factory normal....and this was a "bubba" special. I lucked out and am tickled pink. Equally happy I found this thread. Would've never guessed.....
Stop! Stop! You're killing me here!Guess I'm just saying that provenance on this pistol would be simply a bonus for me. I'd buy it just as she looks -- just because of all the elements that came together:
--S&W
--3rd Gen
--full 5"
--10mm
--blackened gorgeousness
--obviously so rare that I've never seen another
So much to love long before a factory letter tells more.
Stop! Stop! You're killing me here!
Well, I sure didn't sleep last night... this despite the fact that the good wife didn't write the "Big L" on my forehead in permanent marker after all.She was actually reasonably sympathetic and reminded me how poorly any such big dollar gun purchase would have fared for me back in late-January.
She's a good wife!
She actually remembers our discussions at the time about this gun better than I do... and how adamant I was about not taking the financial risk that this was someone's dubious or failed project gun.Man, was I ever wrong.
Anyway, today is a new day. I've already spent hours this morning analyzing how such a horrible mistake on my part came about... and what changes I need to make to my whole gun collecting agenda to make sure that a mistake like this one never happens again.![]()
