I just bought a Model 64 from J&G Sales and I was pretty happy with it. Then I loaded my A-zoom .38 snap caps in it and noticed that if I hold the revolver at a 45 deg angle or better, the cartridge in the 9 o'clock position in the cylinder moves backwards just enough to get its rim caught on a tiny shelf or ridge along the frame and it jams. It does this all the time. Its not with just one of the snap caps either. I have yet to shoot it with actual factory ammo so I don't know if the A-zooms could be to blame. They don't cause this problem in my model 65 though. Anybody got any ideas about what it is and how I can fix it?

I had some snap caps that did this. Found out that real ammo worked fine with no issues at all. The snap caps have a soft rim that grabs, not hard like a brass rim. Also, snap caps have a sharp 90 degree rim, not beveled like a brass rim. Try it at the range with real ammo. I'll bet it works absolutely perfect. Captain Hornet.

Lefty Guns:

You can get some very thin rubber o-rings in the plumbing aisle of Lowe's or Home Depot or Ace. These will hold the snap-caps in the cylinder nicely. Real ammo fits more snugly than the snap-caps and nothing will fall out.

Enjoy the new firearm. And, please post some pics. Everybody likes to see the latest family additions.

Thanks

Thanks. Our firearms instructor told me the same thing, that snap caps are not the same specs as actual factory ammo, even A-Zoom ones, and to try it with real ammo and see what happens. We are going to the range next week and I will be able to try it. I just wanted to get other opinions from people with specific knowlege of S&W revolvers. Will post results.

Lefty,

Just a thought - have you tried this with fired cases? Also, please post some photos if possible.

Regards,

Dave
