Went down to my LGS today and saw a couple of interesting stainless SW's a pre-lock 66-3 and a prelock 65-2 . I have seen several 66's in the past and they seem more common but I have not seen a 65 in the past ?they are both priced at $795 w no boxes . I was told there is 586 in the back that had very little use but they have not proved it yet . The question is what to buy ? Buy the 65 because I have not seen many for sale ? Wait for the 586 ? The 65 and 66 will be gone over the weekend I'm sure . Ok Gents what do I spend a hard earned $800 on ?

Thanks Petersn

They both seem overpriced, and the model 66 is tagged "single action" - perhaps altered from stock? Personally, I'd have a look at the 586, but if it is a common variation and $795 I'd pass on that one too.

Probably none and keep
Looking problem is can't buy them on Gun Broker out of State and bring them in - you have to buy what is already in California

There is at least one option. Look into Single Action Exemption.

You're welcome. [emoji12]

That's how I sold my 625 Mountain Gun to a CA resident. I sent the removed part in a separate envelope. It's very easy to make a S&W be a SA revolver and just as easy to fix it. I'd be tempted to bet that's what was done to the 66.

That said, I'd check the 586 first.

Thanks Gents - Thanks Trigger - I will look into that so if I import a single action SW it is ok to bring it to CA ?

There are a few limitations. For instance, the barrel length has to be at least 3 inches. There is also an overall length requirement (I think 7.5 inches, but don't quote me on this one). But most pre-lock S&W's that you are looking at (i.e. 4" barrel or longer, such as Models 65, 66, 586, etc.) would fall into the category. All you have to do is find an FFL that performs the Single Action Exemption.

Guns Direct in Burbank does it. Talk to the folks there (especially Palmer). Great bunch of people.

Good luck!

Edit: If the seller does not want to convert the revolver to single action, the FFL will do it. Then they can help you revert the process after pick-up.

Thanks Trigger sounds like a plan - making a call to Burbank is a lot cheaper than $800.00 !!!!!!

Good luck with your pursuit. Glad to help, even it it means I have one more competition on Gun Broker [emoji12]

Just a little FYI, but both the s&w's say single action. And so does the service six off to the side. Maybe that's just how they label them there?

No in Cali fuc ornia - the only way a gunsh can take these old guns in and then re sell them is as single actions. - they give you the part to return the pistol to regular double/ single action - but they can only sell them by law as single actions . Welcome to our world - also why prices are stupid expensive here

My deep sympathies are with you and all our other friends from CA. Those of us who live in gun friendly states often forget how fortunate we are. Wow, convert to SA, overpay and then convert back to DA! What a pain! Good luck.

Regarding your two choices, I personally would be more interested in that 65. I'm partial to fixed sights and a 65 would be a nice complement to my Md 64. I don't see them very often. But for $800? I don't think so.

So it's illegal to sell a double action, but once it is yours you can convert back to double action legally?

To answer the OP's original question.

I would wait to see the 586 and then decide between the 66 and the 586. I understand things are more expensive in CA but $800 for a 65 is just way too much.

CA has a roster of "not unsafe" handguns. The list gets smaller every year as guns drop off (manufacturers don't renew). The only way to add new guns is to add microstamping, LCI and mag disconnect, unless such new gun can be argued as the same as the one already on the roster. Gun color, sights, place of manufacture, etc. can make a new gun be deemed "different" such as a USA made Glock vs Austrian or the new MC Operator vs the old one, etc.

Revolvers are exempt from microstamping and LCI and mag disconnect do not apply. However, most older Smiths are not on the roster. Hence, Californians have to go through a "loophole" to acquire some of the older Smiths. Such loophole has its limitations, too. For instance, the barrel length has to be at least 3 inches, etc.

In addition, California buyers need to find an FFL that performs the exemption. That "service" costs money, say from $50 - $150+, as not too many FFL's do them.

So a $500 pre-lock Model 65 with a 4" barrel will easily turn into about an $800 revolver after shipping, transfer fees, use/sales tax, conversion fees, etc. I just went through that not long ago...

Then, some sellers don't want to bother shipping to CA as there is an extra form that needs to be completed and most they've heard is that CA gun laws are messed up. They just don't want to deal with it at all. Can't really blame them.

That's our world... I have seen, on many instances, that a pre-lock 686 got bought via private party for $850 with multiple buyers in line as back up. [emoji33] So an $800 Model 65 is not totally ridiculous here. After all, we still observe American capitalism here. [emoji12]

Have you seen the 586 yet? Personally, that would be my 1st choice of what you mentioned. If I had to pay those kind of prices, I sure would have less guns. ( I know, it is what it is) Bob

And i thought our laws in Australia were bad  At least you don't have to pay $7,000 for a second hand AR15!

Find some gun shows in Nevada and drive there. You won't be able to buy from a dealer, though.

Check the web sites like Arms List and find one in a neighboring state for sale by an individual.

So you buy the gun on gunbroker for said amount, and have the single action modification done . Then shipped to you to have the double action modification done. So how much does all the gunsmithing work cost ? In the end it might be almost cheaper to buy one for $800 with the gun shop putting the double action parts back in as opposed to going through all the hassle. Most 66's and 65's are $500-$600 on GB anyway. Plus shipping, plus receiving cost, plus the gunsmith work....easily adds up to the $800.

i see guns on GB quite often that could save me money over the one at the LGS, but after $25-$35 for shipping , and the FFL getting $40 for receiving the gun, I would rather just spend the extra $20-$30 to have the gun in my hand and do all the checks and look it over really well. Can't do that online..and shipping one back generally cuts into whatever savings I may have had.
