What to do?

This is why God invented credit cards. ;) One only goes around once in this life and one never knows when the wheel will stop.

If buying these two guns makes you happy, then go for it. Borrow from a friend or two if necessary. Money can always be made. Wax up your snow shovel, winter is coming. :D

Sell your body. Nothing illegal or immoral.... Maybe a part-time job in your current profession or overtime at your regular place of employment. You can get both and not experience "missed gun remorse". LOL Best of luck, hardcase60

So I got the K38. It's easily a 98% gun. I've seen new guns in stores with worse "handling marks" than this 64 year old beaut. Pics soon.

Although it's a terrible time to do so with the soft market, selling a black rifle to get that 27-2. I can always get more black rifles.

Well I didn't want this as a first picture, but...

Pulled the offending squib with pliers, no problem. Glad I was shooting it and not my wife.

Gun shoots easy and is already dead on. Have to love old school craftsmanship!

Ok some slightly better pics. The outdoor lighting this time of year is a little weak, so the pics are darker than I would like.

Stocks' serial matches the gun (K1724xx). I can't bring out any of the very slight imperfections in this K38. I hope you can see why I couldn't pass this up for $600!

Second range session was much more successful, no squibs this time ;)

If you would use a color cloth/paper behind the gun you would get more detail in the gun. The automatic light metering in the camera takes the whole scene and averages it to an 18% grey. I find a nice medium shade of blue works pretty good. If you have a more sophisticated camera, take a spot reading on just the gun, ignoring the background.

Those things love 148 grain lead wadcutters. Nice gun. At 6 bills, you definitely got a great deal.

Glad I was shooting it and not my wife.

I am also glad you did not shoot your wife.

She is too, though that particular shot wouldn't have hurt ;)

There was a police oriented gun mag in the '90s with a picture of a S&W break open in .32 with that same look, the LRN just sticking out the end of the barrel. Apparently it had been used a perp who had fired at an officer and was shot and killed by police immediately after.

Update: I got my 27-2 5" Skeeter gun! S prefix, dates to 1963.

Pics up soon. It's not as perfect as the K38, definitely has seen some use, but still in good shape. The relieved targets are not in good shape at all, I doubt they are original to the gun, and are getting replaced. Honestly I don't know what to do with them. This isn't a FS thread but if I decide to go that route I'll put them up there. Someone who is much better at refinishing stocks can take a crack at them.

Going to get both and keep my word. I'll just have one fewer poodle shooter in the safe.

Glad it worked out well for you.
The poodle (not mine) thanks you too

BTW, IMHO it would not have been going against your word to ask the first person you dealt with if they would let you out of the commitment that you were ready and willing to keep. Just saying.

True. I just wanted both.

I ended up selling a semi .308, so not really meant for poodles. I have another nice "battle rifle" so it wasn't a great loss. I found the market for 5.56mm ARs, no matter how nice, is deader than Jimmy Hoffa.

The 27 still came with coke stocks in the 1960s. They weren't numbered to the guns, since target stocks very rarely were (required less fitting if any, to the grip frame). If it still has its cokes, a member here can restore them for you.
