What was your first handgun purchase?

S&W 10 HB (dash something), local PD trade-in, I bought at the small town hardware store where I lived in 1976. $100 and a box of Remington RN ammo included. Hated the tiny near lack of sights. Next one was a Ruger Security-six with adjustable sights, about 1980. Got me curious about reloading, and soon after, a couple of Ruger 44's, and several other big-bore S&W's. Have none of them now. Miss them all.

Bought a like new with a box 1955 Colt Detective Special in '99 for around $450. Shop threw in a box of ammo and it had a custom holster with it. Sadly it was stolen almost six years ago. Someday I hope to get it back.

My first one was a Ruger Mk1 5.5" Bull barrel which I still have. Purchased it for Bullseye shooting after a friend loaned me the same pistol only Clark had gone through it. After that came the Colt 1911's and S&W model 29's.

My first pistol was a Taurus PT-145. It never gave me any trouble and I liked it-also shot it fairly well. It was part of the lawsuit some years ago, so I sold it before I reached the point where I couldn't get out from under it.

But like I said-I liked the pistol.

High Standard

Mine was a new High Standard Sentinel 9-shot .22LR revolver. Alloy frame and plastic grips. Traded a Mossberg 16 gauge bolt action shotgun plus $15 cash. That was in 1965.

The gun was stolen in 1969 - I'm sure it was the guy who was repainting our apartment, but I couldn't prove it. I filed a police report and the officer said I'd never see it again. I looked around a few pawn shops but never found it.

A few years ago I got nostalgic and bought one off GB just like the first one.

It was like new but never worked right and I didn't want to put any more money into it. Sold it to a friend for half what I paid for it (with full disclosure).

A few months after the High Standard was stolen, I replaced it with my first S&W (14-3).

And that was the "start" of me and Smith & Wessons.

A Heritage Rough Rider during the rush before the Sandy Hook rush. Sold it and a shotgun barrel for a Model 37 a few years ago (got more in trade for the barrel than the RR).

Of course, I didn't have the money for the 3" round butt Model 19 sitting next to the Heritage in the case that I still remember over a decade later.

First handgun was a Euroarms repro of a .44 Remington New Army C&B by mail order from Century Arms in 1972. The next year my first cartridge handgun was a used Colt Frontier Scout .22 Magnum. Gun, Hunter holster and cartridge belt and 2 bricks of Remington .22 Special $65 OTD. A couple years later I was clerking at the only other gun store in the county and found a .22 LR cylinder for a Frontier Scout in a cloth bag with postage from Hartford, CT in the back of a drawer. I slipped it in my revolver and cut the cost of shooting by more than half.

My son has it now.

Our Ruger Standard, bought new in 1974. Mrs. swsig wanted a High Standard, but the one our LGS had jammed every time the owner tried to test fire it. He said he couldn't sell us the High Standard, but he had a similar gun, the Ruger. He test fired it, and it worked every time. We still have it, it still works perfectly, and it still has the best trigger I've ever pulled. Here it is:

My first handgun was a Ruger Standard, bought new in the summer of 1960. I traded it in on an Ithica 1911A1, which I still have. In later years I bought a duplicate of that gun for nostalgia's sake, pictured here.

That first Ruger was the only gun I ever pulled to avoid conflict. In college, my girlfriend and I were parked on the desert near Tempe, AZ after dark, and a truck full of yahoos roared up next to us and dismounted. I pulled the Ruger out of my glove compartment, held it up to my window and jacked a round into it. As soon as they spotted the fact that I had a gun, they raced back into their truck and took off.

Made me a believer in the right to keep and bear arms.

Used the money i received from my family for my high school graduation in 1992 to buy a 6" 686-3. My dad had a friend with a small gun shop and he let me have it at cost. $289. Still have it complete with box and paper work.

I bought a brand new 4" blued Ruger GP-100 when they were first introduced in 1986. That was my first handgun. I still have it. I also have a 5" blued .44 Magnum Lew Horton Redhawk, a .45 Long Colt/.45ACP Special Edition Convertible Vaquero and a 50th Anniversary Mark II .22 pistol. I like my Rugers as much as my S&Ws.

First handgun purchase was a 7.5" barrel old model Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt/.45 ACP convertible. I used to load round ball loads in .45 ACP cases with an empty .22 short hull for a dipper; primed with whatever, a dip of 700x and a hand-seated .452 round ball. My small-game handgun. Loaded 260 grain hard cast SWCs over 23.5 grains of 296 in .45 Colt cases for the other end of the spectrum. Had a lot of fun with that old sixgun, eventually had the barrel replaced with a 4 5/8" but it was never quite the same. Finally traded it off. I now have it's older brothers, old model flattop .44s, which I also like and am not inclined to part with.

My first handgun didn't belong to me. I had it on a long, gentleman's agreement loan but eventually had to give it back. It was a 4" High Standard Sentinel. I need to pick up another of those just for old time's sake. I really learned to shoot a pistol with that gun.

My first handgun was a second hand High Standard Victor that I purchased in 1990 while in Year 10 at High School. As I was only 16 at the time, Dad had to register it under his name. At the time, I was able to save for it as I had a Part-time job at a local Hardware Store. (That was in in days of "Mum and Dad" Hardware Stores - Before Big Box Hardware Stores had arrived in Australia - Where they had customer service and the sales assistant would actual ask the Customer if they needed help).

My first handgun was a Glock 19. Since I became a hunter I bought Air Gun and Hunting Rifle (one of the most popualr hunting weapons). I read about best weapons for hunting here. There are so many weapons for hunting, it all depends on budget and needs. Can't wait to start hunting season this year.
