I grew up shooting a large assortment of my granddads guns starting at a young age. Shotguns, all different caliber rifles and a huge candy store of pistols. I think my favorite was shooting clays with his Merkel(s) and the power the 30 06 produced (I was 8). I also fancied his M66 snub quite a bit, probably why I have such an affinity for Smith revolvers today.
On my 18th birthday, I walked into a Big 5 and bought a Mossberg 12 gauge pump shotgun for $139. I also bought a few boxes of shells, a box of clays and a hand thrower. My buddies and I headed right out to the closest desert and had a grand old time.
On my 21st birthday, I walked into a gun store in Culver City called Martin B. Rettings and bought a S&W 5906. I think the handgun waiting period in CA back in 1989 was 15 days. SMH.
I moved to Hawaii a few years later and sold all my guns before I left L.A.
I do still own the very next gun I purchased after I moved back to the mainland (and almost every other one I bought subsequently) , which is a Colt Series 80 Mark IV Officers Enhanced .45acp.
