what will i need accurate?

just looking for imput on what i will need to make my 15-22 more accurate, i know it's not intended to be a tack driver like some of the ruger 10-22's but thats what im shooting for.

ive done trigger work and can hold steady enough to get a 10rnd 1" group at 50yards with eley ammo using a 4-16x 40mm scope red/greed dot center point.

just looking for imput on what other changes i can make no worry on cost,
I am also curious what the 1-15" twist differs from the 1-16" twist the normal .22lr have and why smith and wesson chose that.

If you can stretch that 1" at 50 out to 100 I think you'd be doing pretty damn good shooting 2 MOA groups from this gun.

Remove the handguard end cap if you haven't and see what that does. I'm curious to know if S&W added it for a reason or if the gun is better in true free-float.

If you have a good rifle gunsmith have them check the crown.

Other than that, there's not much you can do. You'd need a barrel built for better accuracy.

you could also go for more expensive ammo, probably not something you would want on a usual basis, but just to try it out once would be fun. Lapua Midas / Midas + for example. Here is a full on ammo comparison of many many rounds, (granted through a different gun, but the experiment is controlled enough i believe for the results to be accurate.)

when you say eley ammo do you mean the match ammo, there are quite a few of em

midway has the lapua midas+ for ~$19 a box. doesn't seem like much if cost is no concern

The faster the twist (lower number) the lighter the bullets can be and still stabilize correctly.

My CZ-452 - barrel length is 22 inches, rate of twist is 1:16.

My Henry H001T is a 20-inch barrel with a rate of twist of 1:16

My M&P15-22 is a 16-inch barrel, with a rate of twist of 1:14.

Colt Umarex is a 16-inch barrel, with a twist rate of 1:13-3/4

What I'm waiting for is a custom barrel manufacturer that will offer a line of barrels for the rifle. I'd like to have a proper M4 profile match-grade barrel, 18-inches long, and with a 1:16 ROT and a target crown.

yes it was the remington eley target rifle ammo 9$ a box. i shoot cci blazer when i want to unload

your smith is 1:14?? this is why im questioning most .22 rifles have a 1:16 so why did smith go with the 1:15 or your 1:14 btw i would like to keep my 16" barrel, but with a 1:16

ok i removed the handguard endcap i'll try that when i go back to the shooting range and i will research the crown a bit mine is a non threaded barrle btw

well i dont wanna start a arguement but the tighter the twist the heavier (aka longer) the bullet will need to be..

im sure the twist rate was choicen for the simple fact that a short barrel with a slow twist rate produces less back pressure and a lower vel. on the bullet itself...

so by using a barely legal barrel and a tighter twist rate they get the velocities they want and more back pressure to operate the system..

if you look at most of the groups people shoot with a 15-22 its 1.5"+ and the heavier (aka longer) the bullet the tighter they get..

36 grain in my gun shoot 1.5-2" groups all day long.. but step to a 40 grain ammo that is still bulk ammo and groups stay at 1.5" and good match ammo shows sub 1" groups all at 50yds of coarse..

this is never going to be a tack driver in any way the bolt knotches bullets in the mag which is going to hurt performance and the barrel is mashed in place by the hand guard so there is no way to get a fully free floating barrel unless you do the mod to adapt it to ar style handguards.. but they are a blast to shoot so enjoy the time spent playing with it
