What Would You Do If.....

Internet ninjas still exist, unfortunately.

One doesn't need a gun to be a person who cares about others.
Shame on me nothing. It's real easy to tell someone else that they should risk their liberty and property for some lame-ass who doesn't have enough sense to defend themselves, or to meddle in the obviously volatile business of others.

Personally, I have never been one to stand idly by whilst someone is the victim of an assault...or any other crime for that matter. That was my stance before, during, and now after my career as a LEO.

It puzzles me that some folks jump on the band box and strike up the orchestra when someone else takes action (like Joe Horn) even to the extent that deadly force is involved yet they won't do so themselves. That is a primary reason for the decline of law and order in society.

Be safe.

Because I don't want to get involved in an altercation in which I don't even know who the good guy is, in no way causes more crime. I would leave and call the cops. The criminal justice system probably won't do crap and Americans seem determined to tolerate a lot of crime anyway. It's great to lead the charge, but not when you're charging alone, only to get picked off by a justice system as likely (or more) to go after an honest citizen, and slimey lawyers who use the legal system to protect themselves while they steal via bogus lawsuits.

As far as Joe Horn goes, I'm glad he stopped the two burglars, but I would have handled things vastly different and, I hope, saved myself a lot of grief. God bless him for what he did. In most American locales he would be looking at hard time.

Look D, I don't actually think we're that much in disagreement. Neither one of us wears the black hat. I'm just not as willing to involve myself. You were a cop and have been down this road many times and are better trained and far more experienced in those kinds of situations. I feel that it would be downright stupid of me to get involved, so I won't. Like I said, with small children or the elderly, it's a different ballgame.

Flop,

We do agree in essence...and wholly re: the Horn incident. To be sure, my comments are NOT directed to you. Frankly, I do believe you, personally, would choose an appropriate course of action.

Be safe.

The people saying stay out of it are right. I have handled many civil defense cases, representing law enforcement officers accused of excessive force against some family member when responding to a domestic violence call. Trust me, the victim will NEVER support the officers (or you) by the time you take their depositions a year or two after the incident. They are too many motivations for them not to. Hate cops. Love perpetrator. Mother of perpetrator's kids. Perpetrator promised her a new car out of the lawsuit proceeds. Perpetrator is supplying the drugs. Perpetrator is sexing her crazy. You name it. Life is COMPLEX. We good people live simple lives defined by rules and sanity. People involved in these types of situations DO NOT. It is difficult to comprehend the way in which they make decisions or move through life. LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Well, I have never justified a man hitting a woman and totted quite a whoopin for it a few times, but I would intervein without drawing, if it came to hand to hand combat I am trained in two disciplines of ninjutsu and can handle that, but if he drew any kind of weapon then by law I can draw my weapon on him in self defense. Usually if you just flash your gun at a man that is the last thing coming to his mind when he pulls a tire iron, knife, etc. and will shock him so bad he will just back down nolonner a threat to you or her, call the cops and wait, let them sort out the rest

I'd have the wife call 911 and get out the camera. Ask the gentleman to say "Cheese" while me or her snapped away. Hopefully that would get his attention and stop the assault. If he came for me, I'd be within my rights to use deadly force, and hopefully I wouldn't hesitate. In fact, in SC it would be legal for me to use it to stop the assault. And no worry about a civil suit from the female.

Plus I'd have pics for evidence. And yes, the wife carries a camera (and gun) everywhere.

Not getting involved would not be an option.

Sounds like the best advice yet; and the situation described where the beater claimed to be a cop, well I'd stick around any way and be a good witness, maybe even hold them both at point until I saw some credentials or his backup arives.
