I'd say its a 50% gun, but the frame is less than that. I't kind of like the
old joke: I've got one foot in the oven, and one in the icebox. On average,
I'm comfortable. Trying to finish-rate this gun does not make a lot of sense.

As to value, you would need to know its history. If this is not an important
gun, like an LEO or General Patton, etc, then its just a not-too-good looking
shooter. Maybe $300, but its not my area of expertise. If, on the other hand,
it's something special, like a McGivern gun, then it's worth a whole lot more.

I have seen HDs looking worse than that sell for $500-$700 recently. Seemed high to me but that's what I saw. I'd grab that $300 and laugh out loud.

Hard to believe you think half the finish is off that gun. To me it looks a strong 75%, unless there is a lot of finish off areas that are not shown. The grips will bring $150-200.

First, it's extremely subjective to rate the finish on a single photo showing one side of the revolver. However, we might suppose the other side has similar, if not identical wear. If so, it is a 90% original finish specimen, IMO.

Secondly, I believe many of us would buy a particular revolver for more than it's worth in the marketplace, for a number of reasons, which we have discussed so many times, therefore I won't regurgitate that old chestnut again.

Finally, many of us, typically make a very conservative estimate in the face of inadequate information, such as in this case. With those caveats, this is my opinion. The right side of the frame is reflecting light, it does not appear to be blue loss. It appears to be a pre war model HD with excellent grips, if they are the same on the other side by themselves they are worth several hundred dollars. If the gun is "all there" mechanically, I would estimate it's current market value at $400, to $500 or possibly more if it looks better than the photograph depicts. The auction prices of late have been in the $500 to $700 range for 90% to 95 % pre war models and I doubt they will get cheaper any time soon!

Lefty

Why do you suppose this thread is titled

"What would you rate the finish on this HD at?"

If the owner thought this gun was 90%, he wouldn't bother asking. If that discoloration
is reflected light, I would be very very surprised. If the other side of the frame is like
this side, the frame is about 20%.

The thing about estimting finish is that its not suppossed to be an exact science,
but rather a rough overall measure of the gun. If that is blue wear that I am seeing,
this gun has lots and lots of wear. I think saying it is 50% is being overly kind.
The gun may be worth what you suggest, but the surface condition is very very worn -
at least that is what it looks like to me. Once a gun falls below 90%, its got wear.
This one has lots of wear.

Have to go with Mike on this. I am hard on rating a guns finish. At most a 60-65% gun to me. As to value that doesn't mean squat. If that gun is tight as a bank vault, shoots to point of aim, has a perfect bore, and on and on then it is worth more then 5 Franklins to me. I like it, but then I like guns that have character.....

This thread is sure instructive on the subjectivity of finish percent ratings. Hard to even be consistently subjective without more photos. Like Lefty, I suspect the camera is picking up glare on the frame. The frame has fine scratches, I think, but not as much wear as the glare would indicate.

I traded with a forum member for a similar earlier N frame late last year. We consulted a few sources, here and elsewhere and we mutually agreed and valued the gun at I think $325 or $350. It had more valuable grips on it than those, but more more finish wear, so I think a very, very close condition. We were also in your area (Seattle).

It was a .455 HE (and not altered), vs. your HD. I think they should be similar in valuation, but perhaps theres a nod one way or the other.

If you are looking to sell it, I know one collector in the area who would be interested, and I might, too, if you are either the seller or pass on buying it if not.

Otherwise, hope that helps.

These are the only pics I have seen of the gun. I have not seen the gun in person. To me it looks like there is heavy wear on all edges but the flats look to have most of their blueing, though heavely scratched. I bought it as part of a package deal with another HD, post war.
Thank you for all the imput. It will be interesting to see what the gun actually is. We have seen ratings from 20% to 90% .... very interesting.

I am planning on going to the NW get together in march. I'll bring the gun along and pose the same questions for people.
