What ever is at hand I guess. Be it snubby, 1911, hammer or one of my defense canes. I seriously doubt they are getting through the window or a door unless they kick it in and fly through it. Dog is PERFECTLY FINE with invited guests and hopes you brought her a treat. Have had people walk in my house uninvited or not thinking and she is at the door in a flash. Actually bit the ex when she came to check on the house while I was in the hospital. (if she would have called her name and let her know she would have known who it was.)Gets kinda cranky if spooked awake in the middle of the night on top of it. She is a feisty lab when it comes to her house and strangers unless I say it is ok. Car/truck? pffff she will show you where the key is (probably ask to ride along especially if you are going to the river) Just don't walk in the house uninvited.

1911 in .45. In my case I'll be responding to check out the problem. Our home is a split bedroom plan with our teenage grandson on the far side of the house. No way I can stay bunkered down in the bedroom while he may be at risk. We live in the country so response time by the S.O. will be 5-30 minutes, assuming the two deputies on patrol aren't busy with something else.

357 magnum 4 inch barel with two comp 1 speed loaders and a 4 cell mag light by the bed . If you don't keep a flash light in working order with your weapon you are asking for tragedy .I also keep a mini14 and two 20 round mags plus a few boxes of ammo for both guns in the closet ,the wife's side of the bed she has a 357 mag and a smaller flashlight and cell phone . Our plan is defend the bedroom and hall coming into bed room call the police and let them clear the house, yard ect . We have our bedroom arranged where we have heavy furniture we can hide behind and shoot down our hallway and any bad guy returning fire would have to hit a small target shooting back at him ,the flashlights pointing down the hallway one laying on tne floor one across heavy oak dresser would give us light to see a threat plus give him or them false targets . Tactical thinking .Its easier to defend one room than trying to " clear" a house but we live alone our kids are grown so for a family this plan might not be optimal but for a couple ,older ,not great health it makes more sense .

Our nightstand gun is a Model 66. The reason for choosing the 66 is mostly because it chose me. I inherited it from my stepfather. It was his uniform duty gun (retired LEO). My wife is more comfortable with a revolver so that's really the main reason we have a revolver next to the bed, I would be fine with any of my 9MM pistols but I need to know she is comfortable with it if she has to use it. So that's what we have. What I would want if it were just me using it, my SD9ve would be in the night stand and my AR15 would be behind the bed.

My Glock 27 and a Mag light! ;)
The wife will be on the cell phone.....in the closet! :D

"What would I want?

A high-cap, suppressed, light & lasered .45, if not 1911 based then certainly one with a comparable trigger.

What I have is a 73 year old .38 revolver."

Like my father told me NUMEROUS TIMES, "What you WANT and what you get is likely two different things."

Sig 226 with a very bright weapons LIGHT to be sure I know what I'm shooting at. Fortunately, with two dogs in the house, we're unlikely to be surprised...or invaded.

No one is getting in without making a lot of noise so cell phone and any of my guns that are close.

I have to agree.

At my place you'd have to make enough noise to wake the dead (that's me) to get in and my sheepdog "the one who hears the grass grow" would be raising hell thus waking my Cattle dog. He's a little monster.

I'm cranky when my sleep is interrupted.

I have options to put holes through one or many.

In the open nightstand drawer are closest and first "go to" a Colt Agent and next to it a Glock 17 w/2 mags. I have toyed the idea with swapping out the Colt for my 686 4" but it seems big, heavy, and maybe awkward to handle in a stressful situation.

I have a 45 in the bed stand. Of course the wife has to hear it and wake me up because I'm deaf. Then I hope it takes awhile before he finds the bedroom because my hands are numb from nerve impingement. Then it's awhile before I can actually open the drawer, find the pistol, and pick it up.

BUT I'M READY

i can point shoot my 15-4 just fine, but the pair of pit bulls is the better idea.

I keep my Winchester 94 rifle loaded in my bedroom closet, along with my much beloved S&W 696, also loaded. I am more concerned about that darn mountain lion bothering my horse. In an emergency, I will grab the rifle, and I'm not going to bother putting on my pants. My place is about halfway between the little town of Minden, Nevada and Carson City. So if you ever see a man wearing only underwear, running around at night in the sage brush, and waving a rifle, that will be me.

When you think someone is trying to break in first step is call 911 and inform the dispatcher you're armed. Then, if time allows, get everyone into a bedroom (or safe room) and lock the door. If the suspect(s) gain entry inform them you're armed and police are on the way. Bottom line is confront only as a last resort.

Let your wife pick what SHE likes to shoot, have it in HER nightstand, and have her let you sleep in. You obviously need your rest!
Women's Lib goes both ways, right?

First line of defense would be a 70 pound unfriendly GSD (German Shepard Dog) .. If you get by her its all out war .. and am sure they would be looking to harm us !!

2nd line if they would get by Eko would be either 14 rounds of 9mm in my Beretta PX-4 Sub Compact or my Sig P229 Legion in 40 .. several others with in reach including an unloaded AR-15 with a 30 round mag laying beside it ..

Wife would be calling 911 huddled behind a brick chimney shielding her from gunfire ....

Gee I took an INFRACTION on this post seems like a double post according to TOM so anyway the question is mute and I am OUT OF HERE
