Can someone please tell me the difference between the sd40ve and the sw40ve? I'm trying to buy a new return spring cause the plastic one that it came with broke and I'm trying to find a new stainless steel one, but can't find one.

I have an SW40VE and was wondering what the differences were between it and the newer SD40VE as well. Externally, I know my SW does not have a Picatinny rail. Smith did have a converter for Picatinny accessories which I did not purchase as I was not planning on accessories at that time. The SD rail is a Picatinny. Also the grip is slightly different and I hear the trigger is slightly better. It's my understanding the mags are interchangeable but as for the internal, I do not know the differences. I've had no issues with my SW.

Which pistol do you have? And what are you calling the "return spring?" Brownells website has schematics for the SW40V: select "Schematic" then "S&W" then find your model. Recoil springs and trigger return springs are available.
S&W has not published parts schematics for the SD series, and S&W is the best source of parts for the SDs.

I don't know of any plastic springs in these guns. Could you mean the recoil guide rod, it's right under the barrel and is made of plastic. The recoil spring goes on it and it is a one piece unit,on the SD models, it's called a captured spring. It's unusual for this to break, but anything can happen. I don't remember if the older SW models had a captured spring or separate spring and rod.
You could call S&W and describe the part. They can help you get a factory original that will be correct for your pistol. Midway or Brownell's may have replacement parts for this too.
