It was 1969. R & R in Hong Kong after 7 weeks on the gun line. Walked into a very large beer hall filled with Aussie sailors. The Rolling Stones "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was playing very loud. Fosters beer was flowing. It felt very good.

Don't know how I missed this thread until now but Janis Joplin gets my vote,we didn't get to here the radio often but when we did she was on and her voice was a killer. Most of that music was good but it brings back too many things that make you think more than is good for you sometimes. Lee was dead on with his post I could not add a thing.

Edited to add-
If your demons chase you, get some help. It can be a long way home if you go alone.

The man is right! For many, many years when someone asked me when I was in Vietnam, I truthfully answered "just last night".

I rarely visit anymore and that is pretty nice. Thanks VA!

I was born many years after the Vietnam war but their is one song that makes me think about it and all the men and women who served in the war.

George Jones - fifty thousand names

Even though I was born in 59 with a hippy older sister who introduced me to rock at an early age, I got nothin.

I still enjoy the music, just no association with Vietnam.

I heard one today and recalled this thread. A couple guys I knew that had been to Vietnam had mentioned it way back when.
Joe South's "Don't it make you want to go home"
It does have a melancholy something to it. Couldn't imagine being over there hearing it. Forgive me if it has been mentioned.

My wife and I just got back from a tour of Vietnam and Cambodia. I had a low draft number in 1972, but I did not get drafted. God bless to all Americans that served. I have a lot of friends that served, many who suffered from Agent Orange.

For all the great songs, I vote for The Animals, " We Got To Get Out of Here". We went to the Hanoi Hilton, the Tunnels, Da Nang, and Saigon on this trip. I thank the Americans that served. We fought the Vietnamese for about 11 years. They have been fighting the Chinese for 2000 years.

If you are a vet and can go back, consider it. I think that it is the most capitalistic country I have seen in a in a long time. But, I can understand those Americans that never want to go back. It is a hard choice.

Great montage link of music from the era. Opening song Give me shelter, one of my favorites. Little trivia, they were going to redo the back up track where the back up singers lady's voice kind of cracks, but decided to keep it as is, which to me is one of the best moments.

Lee-from reading your post, we must have been in country about the same time. I was going to see Hendrix, Joplin, and the Doors when I got home-nope. My tour was Oct 18, 1969 to the same day in 1970. Were you there for Cambodia?
