Whats THE song, that makes you think of the Vietnam War?

It was 1970. I was just old enough to understand war was terrible.

I was the oldest of three. We all took our dad to the airport. He was dressed is khakis. Just before he walked out to the waiting airplane, he kissed my mother, my sister, and newborn brother. Then he knelt down in front of me. He shook my hand and told me that I'm the man of the house until he came home. I asked him where he was going. He said to Vietnam. I said how long. He said one year.

I remember my mom cried. Then my sister. For some reason I didn't. We watched him all the way to the airplane. ever since that day my father has always been my hero. One year later my hero came home. But he was somehow different.

This song was playing in the airport terminal as we walked out. Remember it like it was yesterday.

Another that comes to mind is: Wooly Bully. Yep, you guessed it, I watched Full Metal Jacket, again last night.

Way back in the old corps- had some associates (un -indicted co-conspirators)
who had the LP with Wooly Bully.
I never did find out what was the song in front of Wooly.
On their LP, it was just a big gouge. Every time Wooly would end, somebody would pick up the turntable arm and drop it to repeat Wooly.
This was way before SEA.
Back then , we were still calling it French IndoChina!

Two things I think of about the war in Vietnam are:
1) thank my lucky stars I had a high draft number
2) the movie "Good Morning Vietnam" with Robin Williams as the DJ. So many wonderful tunes on that soundtrack brought back many memories. For some reason the one that REALLY stuck with me was "Its a Wonderful World" sung by Louie Armstrong. I mean really, the irony of the beauty that exists in our world vs horror that was Vietnam, well...made a lasting impression. What must the guys in the trenches have thought when THEY heard it???

Something about Louis Armstrong's voice really is soothing. He's one of my favorite Jazz people.

Nam era songs

For What Its Worth, Buffalo Springfield.

I remember listening to the "lottery" where they drew birthdays out of a hat to determine who got drafted. I got a number high enough to avoid the draft.

"yellow bird with a yellow bill"

But seriously, Soldier Boy, by the Shirelles.

Like a Rolling Stone-Bob Dylan

I guess I'm a "child" of the Viet Nam war, born in '73. When people talk about a "high" draft number and so forth, I count myself a very lucky man.

My Dad was the last man in his county drafted for the war (or so he has always told me), and was sent to basic training. Upon completion of basic (or whatever training he had post-basic) his class was assembled and asked if anyone had a brother or father in a combat unit. Dad and two others raised their hands, my Dad because his brother was in the 82nd Airborn (but not in country). Those three men were sent aside for assignment, and the rest of the class was sent to Viet Nam (again, this is what my Dad has told me, so I take him at his word).

Dad was sent to Germany (where I was born), and history is what it is. Had things played out different, I may not be typing this. Who knows? That war, for good or bad, holds a certain reverence for me, even though Dad saw no combat. I truly appreciate those that DID serve "in country" and can never convey to them my thanks that because of them, my Dad didn't have to (although he is a patriotic man who would have GLADLY went).

ALL Viet Nam vets hold a place in my heart, and I NEVER cross paths with one without thanking them, proudly and publicly, for their service.

THANK YOU ALL.

As far as music, I can't contribute as I wasn't even born yet! LOL

Um no......

Where you a helicopter pilot in RVN?

Maybe a helicopter pilot in the RVN could explain it to me.

ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS
"Sky Pilot"
(Burdon/Briggs/Weider/Jenkins/McCulloch)

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he's still behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
Sky pilot.....sky Pilot
How high can you fly

You'll never, never, never reach the sky
You're soldiers of God you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
May God give you strength
Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
Only time it will tell

In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words
"Thou shalt not kill"
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky

I assume it's about the chaplain?
