I have limited my semi autos pistols to 45ACP and 9MM and have a 1000+ stash of ammo for these

but the revolvers
38spl.; 357mag; 44mag; 45colt; 454 casull; 460S&W mag......
I only have a couple of hundered rounds per caliber

oh, I almost forgot the little .380auto --just a 100 or so......
and .22's ---not sure of the count, mass quantities for sure.....

How about you -- several hundred or several thousand rounds stashed?

Factory ammo or primers, bullets, cases, and powder for do-it-yourself?

Total? About 7000, mostly 9mm, .38 Super, .40, 5.56/.223, .22lr. Plus a few hundred .38spl, 12ga, and .45-70.

Ordering another 500 .223, plus about 100 each .40 and .38spl today.

Somewhere, I read... (maybe it was a t-shirt)...

"If you know how many you have,

you don't have enough!"

:D

If you can't measure it by the pallet or ton, it isn't enough. ;)

I sold all mine at the last gunshow, except 2 boxes of 6.5 Jap. :D

I try to keep over 1k of FMJ .45 and 300 of Hornady XTP. Right now I have a little more FMJ than that, but I haven't been out shooting in 2 weeks.
I try to keep 300-400 on hand in .32 for the Kel-Tec and about the same in 12Ga. buck shot.

Handgun's (.38, .357, .45, .44 Spec, .44 Mag, ) around 1000 Rds each. The .45 ACP I usually keep 1000 major loads and 1000 target loads. The 38 S&W, 32 S&W Long, .380, and specialty rounds like 7X30 Waters and 7 TCU maybe 200 - 300.
Rifle (.222, .22-250, .243, .308, 30-06, 8mm) between 500 to 1000 rounds each the Prairie Dog guns have closer to 1000.
.22 RF maybe 5000 rounds.
12 Gauge, 1200 rounds and 150 lbs shot to load more.
Enough bullets and powder & primers to reload everything back to capacity at least once.

44 forever ---no good reason to want to know ---

I'm reading a book:
Patriots A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse by James Wesley Rawles

Amazon.com: Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse (9781569755990): James Wesley Rawles: Books

its a story of survivalist(s) and in it mentions that most citizens have an average of 200 rounds of ammo ---along with not nearly enough food or any other supplies to last any length of time should the worse come to pass........

I thought I'd check it out the ammo count ---I know a gun owners/shoots forum is a little skewd ---guess I could find a scrap-booking forum and see how those guys/gals are fixed for ammo......

Well, let's just say the ammo shortage has had no effect on me at all . . . and won't for about 15 to 20 years. I live in California where the legislature has been threatening all kinds of restrictions and extra taxes on ammo and primers for the past 9 years. So, I acted accordingly. Thus, while not specifically preparing for a nationwide ammo shortage, I was indeed well prepared. In fact, I was a bit overstocked on 380 Auto ammo so I took the opportunity to sell some off at a good price . . . and the buyer was thrilled to get it.

Many years ago someone told me, after noting that I had very little ammo for each of the many firearms I had, to keep in mind "those guns are nothing more than launching pads for ammo. Without enought ammo, they're just paperweights." I listened, I learned, and I acted.

I can't store too much since each bullet in California comes in a 3'X3' serialized padded wooden box marked "do not open, even in case of emergency."

I have no idea. Maybe enough.

I've been buying in for the last couple of years. Read some of Charlie's stories about coming up to KY for our gun show. We'd sit and chat. Then one of my forward scouts would return with hot info, and I'd leave him to continue my scavenging. Then I'd bring back the latest goodies and we'd continue our chat. His son was no better. He'd come buy the table at a dead run, out of breath, wanting to off-load his latest score.

The difference is age and experience. I have bird dogs out finding the stuff for me, Jr. tries to locate the objects of his desire himself! :) Charlie prefers to sit and rest his knee, watch the local flora and fauna, and talk guns.

The hot ticket these days is to buy it when you see it. That includes reloading components. If you were imprudent and didn't store nuts for the winter cold, you'll starve.

Never divulge how much ammo you have. Or where its stored. Always store it different places. Don't make it easy for a thief. You only have enough when all the locations are so bloated you find the guy who tried to steal it on your porch with a back injury because he tried to carry too much. Don't waste ammo shooting him. Just drop a few cases or .50 cal cans on his head.

As Barry said "A bunch, but not enough." and as Perazzi said "can't count that high.". As I say, come moving time there will be about four or five truck beds full of nothing but ammo.

Class III

300 Rounds in 9mm

30 Rounds 12 ga.

Try to buy a box a week, but sometimes I shoot more than I buy.

Don't want to say, but not as much as the Forum member whose unit of measure is "basement full."

This kind of question sparks interesting discussions. For instance, if you have rifles in many calibers, do you need a huge stockpile of ammo for each one, or just for your "go to" rifle?

Another point, all rounds are not equal. Many years ago, I bought a boatload of Egyptian 8mm Mauser and Iraqi .303 British. Still have most of it. By the look of the containers, this stuff was NOT always stored under optimal conditions. When it's shot, you will experience the occasional hangfire / misfire. You can't really compare this stuff to factory fresh ammo.

I'm not expecting a Mad Max type breakdown of civilization, and if I were I would worry about a lot of other things (like who is going to take in my aging mother, provide her and other family members with their medicines, and oh yeah food and fresh water) before I started to count ammo.

I do have an inventory of my reloading supplies, however, but this is so I know what to snap up at gun shows when I see a good price and what to pass by because I am already full up on that component.
