Model 65

I like the grips! Now that's an old-school LEO trick.

AS for me, I love the old N-frames. But I had a used 4-inch 586 with an excellent trigger pull. The gun was ruined in the Katrina flood-- despite efforts to restore it.

By FAR my Highway Patrolmans are my favorites, I have 2 mod. 27-2's, a 5" and a 6" that in all honesty mean absolutely nothing to me. However my workhorse, life defender, home security and woods tramping gun is a well used 10-6 factory over-stamped 13-1, it throws Buffalo-Bore 180gr. hard cast bullets right where I am aiming! It truly is a dear old friend, and probably the best $100 I ever spent! I have owned 586 and 581 and just never had a feel for them, or really saw the need for such.

My 4" nickled M-27-2. Came with an action job,
very nice trigger.
Runner up-my 6" M-28.

So many great guns in this thread. I just love S&W 357's and simply can't pick one favorite... anyway, here's one of my faves... this choice is far from being one of my most beautiful S&W's, but a very valued gun simply because there is no better choice to have in a coat pocket when walking a dark city street, lonely stretch of beach at night, wherever you might encounter a seemingly innocent passerby who unexpectedly and suddenly turns evil up-close-and-personal-in-your-face. No time to pull your G30 or bobtailed Commander from your hip holster? No problem when you have this in your coat pocket.

No need to even pull it out. You can be poised, gun in hand, and ready to pull the trigger instantly if you even suspect trouble... without anyone even having a clue that you are armed. It provides the quickest "no-draw" in the west! You get the drop on an assailant even when they think they have the drop on you. Magnificent and a very effective self defense tool. No matter how many or what other guns I have or carry, for me there's no substitute for a 640-1 in the coat pocket.

The "surprise that saves."

Sometimes I do night city scape photography downtown, where all kinds of questionable characters are passing by and it is reassuring to have a 640-1 on tap in the coat pocket. THAT's why I nominate it as one of my "faves".

I have a 642 which is lighter to carry, but I prefer the greater punch and the recoil resistance of the heavier 640-1.

Some very good answers here. Hard decision for me. Have a 586 6" shoot PPC with, 686 2 1/2" I carry, 27 4" a just look at. All time favorite first weapon I bought out of college when I went into Law Enforcement a 4" model 19
