What's your favorite part of the Thanksgiving Feast?

My dad used to stuff the turkey with an old goose dressing made with potatoes, giblets, and bread crumbs of course. It was always a favorite for most people at the table. That recipe was from an old Watkins cook book from the 40's. I'll be making it again this year and it'll all be gone pretty quick.

Nothing to do with eating. It's the fact that the FAMILY is all together and after dinner the men will be driving to deer camp.

This year, for the first time Ever, ALL 4 of my kids and their spouses, and (the most important part) ALL 9 grandkids. (from 1 to 17) along with a few others, expecting 30 to 35 people. 4 generations of both families!! First time my mom gets to meet two of her great granddaughters!

I asked my kids (ages 21, 18 & 18) if they wanted me to make the traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year. They unanimously said they'd rather I make my award-winning patty melts. Fine by me. A lot less work. But we will have pumpkin pie.

My oldest son is an executive with BDO in Philly. He loves to cook, so he completely takes over the prep, all the way through serving and carving. My daughter who also lives in Philly almost always comes home as well, and she just might be the best baker on the planet! My wife and I really enjoy the difference from when the kids were young and we were both in the Army working 16-hour days all too often.

In chronological order not necessarily ranked best to worst or vice - versa: The bourbon Old Fashioned, the stuffing with gravy (cooked inside the bird of course), lemon chess pie, football, nap, second helpings of dessert, waking up the next morning and heading to the deer woods! All interspersed with misbehavin' dogs and family!

The turkey for me with cranberries close by. This year it is wild turkey and not the 101 variety. Maybe later for that.

This thread made me think of something I miss doing on the big holidays.

When I was on active duty the Chiefs, colonels and general (if there was one), would serve the holiday meal at the chow hall. Most who passed through the line were on duty, but there were always lots of single airmen who lived in the dorms, too.

My usual station was the turkey. More than one wing commander told me he didn't know if he could afford to have me serving the turkey! I'll admit the portions were generous. Great memories.

When married to late wife #1, the best part of Thanksgiving was either a certain family member leaving or my wife and I leaving to get away from her. This woman had a major phobia about dirty plates, so sitting around the dinner table chatting, and picking at more food as and when was totally out. She totally destroyed every holiday meal for me. I've had less of a bum's rush in a Cheescake Factory on busy Friday night.

For many years I played a double header. Mom had her Thanksgiving meal at 1300. It was a packed venue and ridiculously fun. We would beach ourselves, watch Detroit lose and then head to Ruthie's mom and dad's at 1700 for round two. I wore maternity pants.

Ruthie's mom made a spectacular cornbread dressing. No one as yet has been able to replicate it. I do miss it.

For over 20 years my Thanksgiving was spent at the deer camp. Not so now that the families have grown. Now, I enjoy the entire event, the people, the food, and even the football. But the best part of all is when that last car leaves the driveway. Then is when I return to camp.

Ruthie is ecstatic once again at being able to entertain and host a large gathering.

Southern style cornbread dressing like Mama used to make. NOBODY refused her dressing. Put a little gravy on it with cranberry sauce on the side. You eat just a pinch of the cranberry sauce with each bite. YUM!
Afterwards, pass me one of her pumpkin pies, an you get your own. This one's mine! Room temp, NO topping of any kind. She coulda sold a million of em.

The only negative is the weight gain, which only takes hours to put on but days to take off.
