What’s your hat worth?

Just in my relatively worthless opinion, hats sorta go with geography.
I'm NC, born and bred. Yep, there's some 'horsey' areas of the state where men and women dress up like cowboys - but just looks strange to me given the location.....

I think Western hats belong West of the Mississippi.
My best real hat is a vintage Filson 'Tin Cloth', that's a sort of oiled/waxed canvas. Classic field hat.
The other is a well worn dark green felt campaign hat - great for cool days in the woods when blaze colors are not needed.

I spend a lot of time on boats - caps rule here as they're often turned backwards while running and on plane so as to not blow off. Anything with a brim will launch off on a breezy day or if you're running 30 mph or better.

I very seldom wear a hat. What's the pond a time I did enjoy wearing a Resistoil XXXX beaver cowboy hat. I gave it to my little brother because I thought he would enjoy it. He has. From time to time I wear a baseball cap if I am out jogging, etc. Sincerely. bruce.

These started life as Resistol Open Roads, (not sure about the light color one) they're vintage, but I decided to re-block, trimmed the brims and finished them as Fedoras, the darker one is from the 20-30's. Very high beaver content in both if not 100%.

I'm mostly bald and live in a place where the sun is harsh. 99.9999% of the time, if I'm outside, I have a hat on. When I'm inside I always remove it. My father taught me that a gentleman removes his hat when he walks inside. The USAF reinforced this. So, I always remove my hat when indoors.

The OP didn't ask what my hat cost. He asked what it was worth. To me, a hat, any hat, is invaluable. The sun is brutal and unforgiving. A hat is a necessity for me.

I have a lot of hats. Ball caps, felt hats and leather hats. I have helmets for riding the motorcycle and a hard hat at work (that almost never gets used). I just ordered this one:

I prefer leather, but felt is better in the summer.

Cool hatband, is that wool or beaver? If you like wearing a felt hat in the summer you should try the beaver as it breaths a lot better than a wool felt.
One of these days I'm gonna break down and get an O'Farrell made.

When you're caught out in the sun or rain for extended periods of time the wide brim is very handy. The down side is when you get idiots in command that make a ridiculous issue about making the troops put on the hat every time they are out of their vehicles and are more worried about dress appearance than efficiency or safety. However, I think that mentality is fading.

Why do so many agencies opt for the 'campaign' hat?
I heard that one agency, with which I am familiar, opted for the campaign hat because of the rising cases of skin cancer amongst its employees.

Forty-six years ago, when I was first diagnosed with skin cancer, the doctor told me, "When you go outside, I want you wearing a hat! Not a ball cap, but something with a wide brim that also protects your neck and ears!"

I was already wearing Stetsons pretty much whenever I went outside, but after that, it was mandatory.

I splurged and had one made by a guy out in Bowie, TX when I lived down there. Wore it all the time. Best thing for rain or sun. Got it stashed away somewhere around here. Not accepted as well up here in Cleveland.

Loved the Chris LeDoux link. Got to record him with the mobile truck for his live CD up in Casper. Great talent. He is missed.
