When Elvis died, do you remember when/where you first heard it

I really don't remember where I was or anything but I do remember thinking after seeing his latest pics before he died that I was surprised he lasted that long.

I was working at Jewell Smokeless Coal Company in Buchanan County VA, got off work at 3PM and heard about later that evening.

Worked a security detail when he performed in Houston about
a year before he died.
Walked with him and his detail to the stage.

He was stoned on pills.
They had to help him up about 4-6 steps to the stage.

Yet when he hit that staged there was a total transformation.

I heard about it from a hooker that was a CI.
She was a wreck.

I was three years old, but I remember it on the evening news. My parents had to explain who Elvis was and why it was a big deal to people.

I often use the phrase “deader than Elvis”. A young colleague recently expressed confusion and asked me “Elvis? Who’s Elvis?”. That made me feel old.

During my senior year of HS Elvis performed at the old Hollywood Sporto the Feb. before he died. I was invited to go as a guest of an acquaintance of his but passed. The Elvis I had appreciated while growing up seemed to me to be gone yet I heard later that he put on a fine show despite appearing exhausted.
The news of his death did not affect myself or really anyone else I knew but for the same thought, "Damn, another one gone too soon.

I was driving to work when I heard it on the radio. Always kind of liked his music, sad to hear about it. My mom was certainly upset by it, she was a bit of a fan when his career took off in the 50's. Years later when she retired from Dillards she went to work in the Graceland gift shops, loved the job and getting to interact with Elvis fans from all over the world. I still have a bunch of Elvis stuff from there, things she had gotten herself as well as various things I got from her for birthdays and Christmas. Drinking from a Graceland glass right now for instance.....

The company I worked for when Elvis had his concert in Maryland used off duty Prince George County LEOs for night security. One of them with which I had a friendly relationship was showing of something to a group of managers when I came in to work a few days after the concert. Officer "Smoky" had worked "on duty" security at that Elvis concert. He said Elvis had thanked him and pulled off a ring he was wearing and gave it to him. I'll never forget that ring! It was a gold ring with a square box center piece covered in diamonds .... YIKES !! For what it might mean to the story ..... "Smoky" was a black officer.

I had just pulled into the local Sears Outlet store (yeah, they used to have those. ) when two sobbing teenage girls ran up to me shouting "Is it True? Is it true?" I asked is what true? They replied "That Elvis is dead!"

For the record, I liked Elvis. I thought he was a great entertainer. But I never was a true fanatic. I was born and raised in Memphis and still live in the Memphis area, but in my 70 years, I've never been to Graceland and probably never will.

Was recovering at home from a severe left knee injury and extensive rebuild surgery doing at home PT exercises when I heard the news.
