I'm curious about some of the ones that have been around for years.............not all the computer related/derived stuff. For example, I've been told:

1) TIP........to insure promptness

How was COP derived from police officer?, etc. :D

I'm with Alpo, I've heard the same explanation, supposedly derived from the copper buttons on British Bobby uniforms.

Just going off what I remember from my intro to Criminal Justice class. The first law enforcement officers were called bobbies, they worked under Sir Robert Peel in the London PD. Their badges were made from coppers, shorten that down and you get "cop".

It's been my experience that, especially with the internet, people make 'em up as they go along.

And then they get all upset and offended when you don't know what they meant.

The Millennials have taken the use of abbreviations to a new height. The advent of handhelds and the speed with which communication happens has spawned "text speak", made up almost entirely of abbreviated word forms.

All language is made up as we go along. And if we old farts want to continue to communicate with the younger generations, it is up to us to learn their new word forms. 'Cause they ain't waiting for nobody.
