Greetings,

Can anyone tell me how these pistols compare in in size to each other? I think the Model 39 is larger than the P7, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dave

The M39 is bigger, but quite possibly easier to carry.

As weird as that sounds, the P7 has a very short mass forward of the trigger guard and is thus very butt-heavy. This makes the grip tend to stick out in all but the best designed holsters. I had a couple that worked well but always ended up carrying something else on a regular basis.

The P7 is fairly unique in that it has a gas-delayed blowback mechanism that reduces recoil even though the slide mass is fairly light. The barrel is fixed which tends to make them very accurate.

Thanks, Bill and Greg for your responses. The P7 and the Model 39 were both on my "grail gun list". I was able to buy one of the West German Police P7s last year, so the 39 is still on the list. I like the way that the P7 feels, fits, and shoots. I used it to fire my qualification component of the CHL test, and was the envy of the class. At my last range session, the range master observed that most of my shots were going into a tight group approximately 2" to the right of the "X" ring. He was a P7 collector and shooter and said my shot grouping was very common with novices to the P7 and a result of too heavy a grip on the squeeze cocker. Sure enough, by easing up on the Vulcan death grip, my shots started to tear up the "X" ring. I can't afford a custom made holster, but was able to buy one of the original West German (Border) Police holsters made for the P7. The holster is big, and built like a tank, but will work for now.

Again, Greg and Bill, many thanks for your help and advice.

Regards,

Dave

Dave:

FIST makes an ultra thin Kydex iwb for the P7 for around $40.00. They also make the same holster in leather for a bit more.

FIST Kydex holsters are not the prettiest girls at the dance, but do a wonderful job..

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Jesse and Colby Bruce:

Thanks for your responses and advice. I had no idea the P7 was in the same size envelope as the Sig 239. I tried Sigs way back in time when Sonny Crockett and I were the only ones in America with them. I like the Sig quality and reliability, but they sit too high in my hand, so I don't shoot them well. I used to work as an Emergency Room nurse, and the local cops knew I was a gun guy. One night, the Desk Sgt. calls and asks if I can stop by the jail on the way home from work. He sounds really embarrassed, and I'm thinking maybe somebody got a little too aggressive with a prisoner, and now they have one that's either dead or dying. I get down to the PD quick, and it turns out they have arrested a guy for DUI, and the drunk had a loaded Sig P220 .45ACP in the glove box and none of the cops knew how to safe the weapon (this is back in the days of the revolver). I cleared it for them quickly and left. One of the advantages of working ER in a small town is you get a lot of "professional courtesy" from the PD.

Thanks again.

Dave
