If you wanted to add a model 27 to your collection because of it's history and to be included in your range shooting rotation, which version, including finish and barrel length would you seek and why?

I added this to my collection, a 5 inch, blued carbon steel, 8 shot, Performance Center model 27-8. It might be a little rare for some to be taking to the range, but that has never stopped me. Not because I am rich but probably more out of stupidity. If I had an original Registered Magnum, I would definitely rather put the wear and tear on this one from 2007. Seriously though it deserves to be shot. The Performance Center really did a good job on it. The action is smooth as silk, and I really enjoy shooting it. The balance...

awful slippery slope - Model 27 for collection

Whoa OP......what a question to ask on this Forum! You must have figured out by now after 1 month on the Forum that we are among the world's best "Enablers", that is we will gladly tell you our opinions of how you should spend your money.:D

As to adding a Model 27 to your collection....there is really no such thing as "a" Model 27....rather should maybe refer to it as "my first Model 27", or "the next one I'm getting", or any other term that leaves the door open for the multiple guns you will be seeking. You cannot just stop at finish and barrel length, you need to add grips, sights, number of screws, etc.

So my choices and beginners recommendations (because I've still got a long way go): 5 screw, 6-1/2", diamond Magnas,Pre 27 blue; Model 27-2 blue 3-1/2", smooth GA presentation; Model 27-2 Nickle, 6", 3 screw, 3T's; and just for maximum fun on range day.......a Model 28 with 4"service stocks.

Please let us know how you proceed down this slippery slope with the rest of us.....no way to have just one....as Chief Brody said: "You're gonna need a bigger safe" (or something similar):D

IMO once you get to the N-frame you've moved beyond the realm of easy concealed carry. When the .357 was only built on the N-frame the 3 1/2" guns made sense for Police and FBI.... today there are better choices..... like the 2 1/2 and 3 inch K-frames. But the N-frame snubby does have a great "cool" factor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A 4" 27 addes little bulk to the gun... while giving you a little more sight radius and muzzle velocity............................

Many feel the 5 inch guns hit a sweet spot on the N-frame's balance.

6 and 8 inch guns are strictly hunting .357s in my opinion and for that I'd opt for a 6" L-frame stainless 686!

My personal choice is the 4 inch guns ; I currently own a 4" Model 27-2 recessed but not pinned*, and a 4" 28-?

Footnote * the 4" 27 is the least common barrel length as it was "special order only" until 1980. It competed with the new L-frame guns and was only cataloged until 1990.

Probably a 5"

I have a few vintage .357s- all blued: two 27-2s with 3-1/2" bbl, a 27-2 with 6" bbl, and a .357 Magnum (1955) with 6-1/2" bbl. I also have a modern stainless 627-5 with 2-5/8" bbl (8 shot). If I had the chance to add another vintage .357 Magnum, I think that it would have to be a 5" .357 Magnum (pre-Model 27), preferably a birth year (1954) revolver, blued or nickel- but they're getting scarce. RMs and NRMs are just too rich for my blood, although I'd love to have one. However, I probably wouldn't include one of those into my range rotation.

3.5 in Blue is nice. Probably the most popular. Big enough, but not too big.

If you don't like blue, Nickel is nice.

Five inch in blue is also nice. Probably the most balanced barrel length.

The five inch nickel was good enough for the Florida Highway Patrol

If you are going to do target shooting a 6.5 inch (here no dash) is hard to beat. The original "Coke" grips don't hurt as they just "feel" right.

I _really_ like 5" and 6" barreled N-frames for general purposes -- paper, steel, water jugs, and the occasional pumpkin or melon. My current favorites are a blue 5" 27-2 and a 6" 28-2. Both handle and balance quite well and comfortably absorb recoil with factory 125 gr. target ammo. I also have a 3.5" 27-2, a 4" 28-2, and a 6-1/2" .357 Magnum (pre-Model 27), but the 5" and 6" shooters are currently at the top of the rotation. I don't have any nickel N-frames, they're just too pretty for my simple tastes.

I added this 5 inch, blue carbon steel, 8 shot, Performance Center model 27-8 from 2007. It might be a little rare for some to be taking to the range, but that has never stopped me. If I had an original Registered Magnum, I would rather put the wear and tear on this one from 2007. The Performance Center really did a good job on it. The action is smooth as silk, and I really enjoy shooting it.

Beautiful stocks on that gun.

So many great pics and suggestions-thanks! Seems like
I've already drunk too much of the kool-aid. Fortunately, when I am off the wagon, my bride reminds me, "I don't care. You can buy as many guns as you want." So, in the interest of continued marital bliss, I'd better find that first model 27 or first two, or three or...having rearranged the safe to further enable the habit. Maybe a blued 27-2 in 5" barrel, while keeping the eyes peeled for a nickel 3.5"...wonder what will be first to keep the 28-2 company?

I own a pre-27 special order 4" and just recently traded for a NIB 5" 27-2. I had always wanted a 3.5" and 5" pre 27 and will continue my quest. Which one to acquire next is my only question.
