I'm just browsing but looking for a S&W N frame revolver in 357mag with 6" or 6 1/2" barrel. Which one is the best model?? Model 27, Model 28 trooper or is there another model to look for?

If you want a shooter, get a 28 and spend the difference you would have paid for a 27 or 627 on ammo.

It's simple...

Given that you want a 6" barrelled N-Frame, I would say look for an M27 or M28 (or the "pre-Model Number" version of either) in good mechanical condition and buy whichever one you find first that suits your budget. It seems to be getting to the point that the two models cost roughly the same.

Does forged target hammer & trigger make a difference? Target stocks? Chance you may want to trade up at some point? Does a nice, deep blue polished finish matter? If so, no brainer, model 27. If those things don't matter, you can always put target stocks on a 28. The shorter barrels on both models bring a premium, but the longer barrels bring the prices closer to each other. If red ramp/white outline sights make a difference, as some of us with vision issues, the ramp sight on the 28 makes it more applicable to have it installed, where most 6 inch 27s that I have seen have the patridge front sight. My 2 cents worth. I hope that it has helped.

If it is to be a shooter, either will be fine. If it is to be a shooter and be classy, then the M27. The M28 will shoot as well, but it does not have the shine that a M27 has. From a monetary standpoint, I believe you will find a M28, 6" less expensive than the M27 in the same configuration. Just my opinion. Either one would be great to own.

BigBill, if you want a revolver that given decent care you can soot for the rest of your lifetime than leave to your son get a M-28. If you want the finest revolver produced in the 20th. century spend the extra money and get an M-27. You will not regret it.

I own a M28, but always regretted not going for the M27. Basically the same exact gun, but the M27 sure is a lot prettier if you can part with the extra coin.

Wow, I imagine this is where I am supposed to say Thanks! I have a model 27-8 that I have never shot. I thought it was a darn good looking Classic Revolver, so I had to buy it, when I found it. I was actually looking for a 686+ with a 4" barrel at the time. Actually have a 686+ Talo Edition 3" barrel that I shoot, love that gun! I've heard many times that the 686 4" is the Cadillac of revolvers. If the 27 is better, then it must be one sweet piece of work. I might have to take it out and try it one day in the future. Thanks again for making me feel I made a good investment.

The 686 and 586 were brought out by S&W to eliminate a problem the K frame 357 magnums were having with the new light 357 magnum bullets. The Model 27 and 28 are N frames and they can shoot anything you throw at them without a problem and you would go broke trying to shoot enough to wear one out. The Model 28 and 27 are exactly the same revolver mechanically and the Model 27 has a high luster blue and the steel top strap is checkered. The Model 28 with a matt blue and non checkered top strap were introduced by S&W to reduce the cost so that the Law enforcement departments could buy them.

Was there a combat m27 or m28?? The way you guys sound i may need both the m27 and m28. I go browsing often but i need to save up some more mad money but i could use the plastic too.

I love my M28. I'd love to have a M27 with a 3.5" barrel.... I think the newer 8 shot models are pretty sweet too. Is there a best? IDK. To me it's like ice cream. There are a lot of really great flavors and no real best. Just what I feel like having today.

I've had and enjoyed both. Excellent shooters both. I kept the 28-2 that was my fathers service revolver and gave my brother the 27 that we co-owned.

However, I do prefer the 4" barrel on the 28-2 over the 6" on the 27.

As others have said either revolver would be an excellent choice and only you can decide which to buy based on your needs.

Bigbill, Smith and Wesson referred to the early N frame .357 Magnum revolver as the .357 magnum. The M-27 never had any other official name. Remember, the original N frame .357 Magnum revolver was developed during the depression era to provide a handgun that would shoot a bullet that was powerful enough to penetrate auto bodies and bullet proof vests. It was an instant hit with FBI agents and any other L/E officer who could afford one. I would venture to say that the M-27 saw as much or more combat as any revolver with the name combat attached to it.

While I have both a 6" 27-2 and a 6" 28-2, I actually prefer the 5" 627PC. I just prefer stainless.

I think my nickel 27-2 is the most beautiful revolver I've ever seen. I guess I'm a little bit prejudiced.

Pay the extra money and get the 27, the difference will seem like nothing very shortly.
