Which S&W Revolver Do You Carry Most?

I carry S&W revolvers exclusively. My duty gun is a 4 inch Model 686-6 with my Model 642-2 in my pocket. Off duty my 3 inch Model 13-3 has pretty much been supplanted by my Model 12-2. The Model 642-2 stays in my pocket.

Do you notice a lot of difference between carrying and shooting the 13 & 686?

Which S&W Revolver Do You Carry Most?

Yes. The 13 balances better in my hand and conceals well even in an OWB holster. I don't worry about the 686 getting battered to pieces. Shooting the Model 13 with full power loads takes concentration. The Model 686 is like shooting a .38.

One more thing, now that I think of it: The Model 686 is damn' heavy while the Model 13 is just a bit heavy. Since I turned 65 I find myself carrying my 2 inch Model 12-2 more off duty than the Model 13-3. The combined weights of my Model 12-2 (22.5 oz loaded) and Model 642-2 (15.9 oz loaded) are less than my 686-6 alone.

Post #239 of this thread:
Tie between 627 and 586 L-Comp. The 586 Has night sights, so it goes out at night more. Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel .357 Magnum in the cylinder, .38+P in the pouch.

Since posting this two years ago, as much as I love the 586 L-Comp and 627 UDR, I have completely switched over to a 5th Gen. Glock 17 (same as my 4th Gen. duty gun but 9mm instead of .40) with 800 Lumen TLR-1 and Galco Halo Holster for most all carry; on a hot Summer day a Glock 43 for pocket carry. Both loaded with Fed Prem HST.

I still use an S&W M&P R8 or TRR8 in the wilderness for the longer range and almost double the energy (also, if Moses and Thor get too far out as I watch them on GPS, they immediately return to me if they hear the report of the .357).

As an aside, qualifying with the 586 L-Comp on our 50 round timed course-of-fire took 7 reloads, the G-17 takes two.

The best fit for me has been my 637. I really want to carry a DA/SA in 9mm, but have not found one that is as comfortable as the 637. My search continues. I do have a SIG p938, but I am not a fan of SAO. I have some p239's and a Smith 908; they are just a tad uncomfortable for my carry method.

I carry my model 60 no dash in a Gun Toting Mamma purse. I will sometimes put my model 659 in there if I really think i need something like that. Actually I'd rather not go somewhere like that. I keep one speed strip for model 60 just in case.

I haven't figured out how to carry one of my knives yet:D

I carry revolvers as that is what I have been shooting and useing for 40 plus years .I don't have an argument against automatics just revolvers work best for me and my situation .Caliber? Well anything from a single six 22 mag right around the yard and home or a 357 like out on tne back forty ,have been playing around with 32/20 some also as a woods companion .In town it's a 357 but I don't go there much and don't tarry long if I do me and my friends kinda like it out in the sticks I guess.

Used to be my 60 no-dash until I lent that to my daughter. Tried carrying my 2.5" round-butt 19-4 in a high-ride OWB holster, but discovered I was totally spoiled by the 60, so I started looking for another J-frame. I got a good deal on a 1955-vintage pre-36 that I'm carrying now, and I'm anxiously awaiting arrival of a slightly newer 49 no-dash that I just found online. Each one cost me right about the street price for a new 442, but I'm old-school. I just like the feel of the steel guns. There's a weight penalty, but at 6-0 and 200+ pounds, I don't really notice an extra 7 or 8 ounces, except when I'm shooting. Then it really helps to soak up the recoil. I've never found any J-frame 38 to be particularly pleasant to shoot, particularly with small concealment grips, but the alloy guns are particularly nasty in that regard. In my personal opinion, very few people who buy and carry them practice nearly enough, and that's one of the reasons. I get asked for recommendations for CC and home defense fairly often. I generally mention the J-frame snubbies, but I describe them as an expert's gun, one with a steep learning curve to reach acceptable proficiency and one that requires frequent practice to maintain that level. Much as I love mine, I'd have to say it's probably the least user-friendly revolver S&W makes, except perhaps for the X-frame portable artillery. No opinion on the Governor; never felt the urge to shoot one.
