two 3rd Model .44s
M27 nickel
M27 converted to .44 Special
M544 .44-40
and three 1917s (5 1/2")

My first and only 5" N frame is a Heavy Duty 38/44 converted by Kings Gun Works on the left coast.....it is a very handy and accurate shooter.

I've got a 5" 25-7 in .45 colt and it's one of my favorite shooters. To me a 5" N frame simply balances perfectly.

Twenty years back I had the opportunity to buy a 5" early 29-2 . It was a rebarrel but with a real, Factory 5" barrel. Seller and I were maybe $25 or $30 away from a deal. He was a fellow I didn't much care for and knew he could be half a crook at times.....so I copped an attitude and refused to go any higher.
NOW I wish I hadn't..... as it was a nice older 29 and having shot it with .44 Spcl's it shot really well.

A little old for this section of the forum but a 5" 3rd model 44 shipped to the Houston PD in March of 1931, and a 5" 38/44 Heavy Duty shipped to the King's County (Seattle, WA) Sheriff's department in April of 1935.

I have my original pistol still, a 1973 built 27-2 in nickel with a 5" barrel and I bought a 50th Anniversary of the 357 27-3 made in 1985 a few months ago. The 27-3 is still unfired, but probably not for much longer. I love my N frame 357s.

The 8 3/8" 57s are bringing big money right now. You may want to consider selling it and finding a shooter grade 6" for a couple of reasons...

First look to see where the caliber and S&W marking are on the 8 3/8" barrel and then measure out 5" from the front of the cylinder...if it is like mine the markings will then be way forward of the center point...

Second the gun will have to be refinished after the barrel is cut and crowned and the new front sight installed. So your gun isn't going to have that bright blue factory finish unless you send it to someone like Fords...

If you sell the 8 3/8" and find the right deal on a 57 or 657 6" you may save enough money to have the reduction done for free. And with a stainless 657 there are no refinishing costs other than maybe polishing out a few marks left from the milling machine/lathe clamping surfaces.

The 5" N frames are terrible! They are a sickness and I've got it bad!
I bought a 5" 29-2 at the local hardware store for $650 and then I was hooked.
It was joined by a pre-27, then a 26-1 Georgia State Patrol commemorative, then a 27-2 was sent off to Bowen Classic Arms to be converted to 44 Special, then of of course I needed a 27-8. And another very distressed 26-1 GSP had to be sent of to Andy Horvath to be resurrected.
Once I finally got the 27-2 back from Bowen I liked shooting it so much I knew it would soon be worn out! So of course I found a 27-5 for Bowen to build another 44 special on.
I need help! Maybe a 41 magnum and a 10mm built on 27's would do it...

..so put up pics or we will call the nice men in white to put you back in your straightjacket so you can't type your fantasies any more...
