Why Bother To Conceal If You're Going To Announce You're Armed To The World?

My wife never asks me and I don't ask her....we both carry as a matter of daily routine. A two gun family is better than a one gun family. She is actually a better shot than me most of the time. When we are out and about her level of awareness is probably higher than mine just because she is a woman. Nothing better than a wife who backs you up.

Actually my wife also has her License To Carry Firearms. She has stated several times that she wants her own gun to carry. I have no problem with that as i am always up to buy a new gun. She likes my 40c and i have almost walked out with one for her, but i would rather her handle a few others, that are smaller(for ease of concealment purposes only as she is a better shot than me also) to see if there is something else that trips her trigger. I don't want her carrying in her purse as it is often open and not in her control at all times. She need something that won't print.

She also would not even tell me that she was carrying.

Slightly different topic but my wife also carries and we never ask each other because it's a given.

speedyquad you sir are a lucky man....i have to "get milk" to go to the range, i wish i could ask her to go as a date instead :) i got the "do you really have to have that" wife...she despises my toys. i despise her demands for the dishes to get washed, but i keep it to myself :(

Years ago before I retired I had so much stuff on my Sam Brown belt I hardly had room for any keepers. People commented on my version of Batman's utility belt. Now being retired since 2008. This week I bought a Shield 40. Everything else I have is to large for CCW. My wife asked where I was going to put it? My left side has 2 buck knife cases on my belt. One has my reading glasses, and a ball point pen. The other one has my comb and another item. On my right hand side 2-4 o'clock positions are a small camera, my SOG TF-7 knife, my key ring with about a dozen keys, and then my Samsung G III in a Otter case. I think she has a point, where will I carry it. Not in the front, my belly got too big.

Sounds like your carrying more now than when you were on the job. You might need one of those 'man bags' to hold some of that stuff....

Yesterday I found that the Shield goes good between me and my cell phone. I had my wife look at my cell phone, and she didn't notice the shield in the same area under my shirt. The Shield is so light that I can hardly tell the weight difference.

I fully support open carry (OC) from a Second Ammendment standpoint but it is not something I would ever do. It just does not make sense on so many levels that are too numerous to list. Feel free to disagree but to me OC is just asking for trouble. As to the badge I have one too that is marked "Retired" and it will never be flashed.
I agree with you in that we should be able to carry in whatever manner we choose. Having said that..I'll disagree with you just a bit. :) I OC as well as having my CCW. I OC mostly...because the way I view it...criminals are stupid (otherwise they wouldn't be criminals)...and they're cowards by nature. However, they're still human, and as such have a basic inate desire to want to survive. That said...if a criminal walked into the local Quik Mart to rob it..and he saw me OC'ing..I believe that he will abandon his plan, if only until I leave...because he just wants money for his drugs, he doesn't want to kill for them if he can avoid it. Remember, they're cowards and opportunists. They will seek the weakest among the herd. The guy with the gun on the hip most likely isn't one of them. So OC'ing being a visual deterrent is self-evident, the same as the BG pulling up to rob that same store but he sees a police car out front....that's his first visual deterrent. Then he goes in..see's the Cop with the gun on his hip....that's his second visual deterrent. See my point? I DO NOT want to be a victim at all (which I could be if i'm concealing)..even a victim who prevails over the BG..I was still a victim first. I choose not to be a victim at all. I really do not see any tactical advantage of CCW over OC'ing. The person who carries a weapon is obligated to be aware of his surroundings, to NOT put himself in environments which would put him at risk. He would always be ever watchful and protectful of his weapon at all times (think the ever RARE gun grab attempts). I think one could make a very strong tactical case in favor of OC vs CCW.

Having said all the above...for those who have chosen to carry, in whatever method, need to do so in a very sober and responsible way...and always be ever so alert and attentive to their surroundings. There ya go! Gee...I haven't typed this much since HS...and I'm 56! Have a great day...BE SAFE!

The only time I tell is when I run into a friend or acquaintance that I trust who I know legally carries most of the time. I'll quietly ask if he's armed & let him know that I am also. I might add this seldom happens. In a convenience store/gas station or other business it's reassuring to know he's got my back.

Don't know whether any of you folks have noticed it or not, but those people who would mouth off to anyone and everyone that they are carrying concealed are the same people who feel compelled to blab on and on ad nauseum about EVERY meaningless aspect of their lives. Ugh.

Must be a reference to "Twit"-tur(d).

Letting peeps see your weapon, whether you are allowed w/ concealed carry or not, is an open invitation to LEO's to see if you are legal.

Lots of people catch a flash of a weapon and dial 9-1-1.

Why create problems for yourself?? Keep it in yer pants. (or shoulder rig)

If you aren't my wife, my boss (on shift), A pastor at my church (while I'm doing security) or a cop. the only answer you will ever get from me is "Nope"

I will disagree about any tactical advantage of OC as opposed to CCW. To a CCW, concealment is the single most important tactical advantage that a permit holder (or off duty or plain clothed cop) has. It provides the CCW with the advantage of surprise, as well as gun retention - if a crook doesn't know someone is armed, then he's likely not going to attack someone to get their gun. He's also going to be caught off guard when the weak appearing intended victim shows him a muzzle. Pretty much all law enforcement agencies with any kind of training emphasis on officer survival skills issue or mandate the use of a level 2 or 3 holster to help prevent against gun grabs. The open display of a firearm has not stopped attacks on police officers. Some officers who have been attacked were tactically sound and possessed superior firearms skills. The uniform was as much a target as a deterrence. Criminals are not all stupid, and sometimes more in tune with their animal instinct survival skills than cops and law abiding citizens. Getting the drop on a police officer or OC is certainly not outside of their comprehension. I've talked to plain clothed and retired cops still carrying, and they've told me about how criminals expecting to target sheep were quite surprised and detoured by the sudden introduction of a concealed handgun. On the other hand, how many practitioners of OC have the training and experience to carry their weapon in a manner that gives a crook the impression that they're not dealing with an inexperienced wannabe? How about the ones whose states/cities allow only for unloaded OC? Imagine the image presented to a criminal with a piece stuffed in his pants under his shirt of a guy with an empty Glock in a cheap, flimsy holster prancing around in public? Now, if I was in a gun store to commit a crime and observed all of the employees had OC pistols strapped on, I might be inclined to go somewhere else. Still, such a show of force has not prevented active shooter attacks at police stations around the country. I've got to wonder about the real agenda of some of the OC supporters.

While slightly off the subject, the news in my area reported a couple of weeks ago about gun thefts from vehicles in the metro. The report said that a significant number of the vehicles from which firearms were stolen were displaying NRA stickers. I am NRA Life, but why advertise, especially if you're going to leave your gun in the car? If you have to leave a gun in a vehicle, take measures to at least make them work for it. Police cars, even those with secure weapons racks are not immune from being targeted.
