Why do you carry?

So I can defend myself against my neighbors' attack guard dogs, who criminally willfully or criminally negligently allow their dogs to freely charge off their property to ambush menace myself and other pedestrians on the street. The grave threat is real, the range is very short, the fractions of a second are tiny, and the need to defend is immediate.

How many dogs does he/she have? Sounds like they should all be dead by now.

A lot of well written thoughtful answers that I don't know if I can add anything to. I will add this, I've had a couple of times that I thought I was going to have to draw my gun, thank goodness I didn't... :) and thank goodness I have the right to have one one me.

"So," queried Snidely Snotworth III, lookin' down his un-busted but needed-bustin' nose, "Why do you think you have to carry a gun?" "Well," bellowed the Brutish Neanderthal (that would be me): "Because you're not QUALIFIED to carry one. You haven't got the skills, the judgment, the sense of responsibility, or the courage ...

I carry a gun because there is evil in this world. It strikes in churches, McDonalds, the library, at home, and in traffic. It comes in restaurants, parking lots, and movie theaters.

When it comes, you won't have time to wait for the police. It will come suddenly without warning and with unbelievable violence.

I believe it is my job as a man to protect my family and other innocents from this evil.
Generations of Americans have fought and died to protect this country, their families, and friends.

It is my right and my duty to follow in their footsteps if called upon to do so.

I do not think the question could ever find a better answer than what Iggy has espoused. Truly...for me, it says it far better than I could put into words.

Thanks Iggy

Why do I carry? I am a probation officer. As such I read the criminal history of my "clients" and their reasons for probation or incarceration. It has taught me one thing: You have NO idea what may be coming toward you on the sidewalk.

Ever consider carrying a can of Wasp spray or pepper spray? Also carry a long, stout walking stick and a bright flashlight. It lessens the chance of shooting someone else. Also doesn't make a lot of noise. This should be reported to the city, pound, and/or police ??? Save you from ending up in court or a lawsuit. They will be warned and cited and a record will exist. You don't want anyone harmed, adults or especially children..

Sorry to be so long getting back. Tip of the hat to MichigganScott
bigggbruce and URIT. They were spot on. John Connor in the
recent issue of American Handgunner. Note on the column said
Connor is taking a sabbatical for an undetermined time. This is a
rerun of a old column. I thought it was excellent and wanted
to share with the forum.

In Canada "we carry" to get the firearm from the trunk of our cars to the firing line of a certified gun club. I wish it was different.

I got my carry permit when I turned 21, but never really carried. I've never really worried about being robbed or anything, and more than likely I would give them the car or wallet (even if I'm carrying). Stuff isn't worth it. However, I started to carry after seeing mass shootings and terrorists attacks.
